Chapter 11 - WHAT HE CHANGED AFTER LILY WAS BORN

We searched everything.
Insurance.
Bank accounts.
Beneficiary forms.
House title.
Medical authorizations.
Nothing obvious.
Then Rachel asked for Lily’s birth registration documents.
There it was.
Daniel had filed a supplemental acknowledgment form.
It gave him authority to create a custodial account for Lily without my co-signature.
Legal on its face.
Suspicious in context.
He opened the account two days later.
Then transferred $60,000 into it.
At first, I was confused.
“That helps Lily.”
Rachel shook her head.
The account was pledged as security for a line of credit.
A credit line used by Daniel’s company.
He had put our infant daughter’s custodial assets behind business debt.
“Can he do that?”
“Not lawfully if the funds truly belong to her.”
“Where did the sixty thousand come from?”
Our joint account.
My salary.
My maternity savings.
He moved my money into Lily’s name, then borrowed against it for himself.
I felt sick.
That was Plan B.
If I filed for divorce, he could argue the money had already been gifted to Lily and was outside the marital estate.
Then use the credit line anyway.
The strategy was not brilliant.
It was desperate.
But desperation with legal documents can still destroy lives.
We froze the account.
The bank referred the matter to investigators.
Daniel’s civil problems became criminal exposure.
Then Chloe called me.
“Jennifer.”
“What?”
“Mark got the baby’s full paternity report.”
“And?”
“There’s something else.”
My chest tightened.
“What?”
“The lab flagged a genetic relation.”
I went still.
“Between who?”
“Daniel and the baby.”
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“He isn’t the father.”
“No.”
Chloe’s voice shook.
“But he is biologically related.”
We tested again.
The result was the same.
Daniel was the baby’s uncle.
Which meant Mark was not the father either.
The actual father had to be Daniel’s brother.
Except Daniel did not have a brother.
At least that was what everyone believed.
Diane sat down when we told her.
Robert turned gray.
Then Diane whispered a name.
“Matthew.”
Daniel had an older half brother.
Born before Diane met Robert.
Adopted privately.
Never discussed.
Only three people knew.
Diane.
Robert.
And Daniel.
Chloe stared at her.
“You’re saying I slept with his brother?”
Diane shook her head.
“No.”
Then she looked at me.
“Unless Daniel found him.”
The room became silent.
May you like
Because that meant Daniel’s connection to Chloe’s baby might never have been romantic at all.
It might have been part of something far stranger.
