Chapter 17 - Victoria Finally Told the Truth

The video changed everything.

Police reopened Rebecca’s death investigation before sunrise. Warrants went out for Martin Hale and Adrian Cross. Eric was placed under guard while prosecutors decided what to charge him with.

Grace was released by noon.

When she walked out of the station, Noah was waiting beside me.

He ran so hard he nearly knocked her backward.

“I knew you weren’t bad!” he shouted.

Grace held him and cried into his hair.

I looked away because some moments belong to the people inside them.

Then a detective called.

Victoria had surrendered.

She wanted a deal.

I met her in an interview room with two detectives and her lawyer present.

No expensive coat this time. No practiced smile.

“Why did you tell me Eric cut the brakes?” I asked.

“Because Adrian told me to.”

“You were still working for him at the restaurant?”

“I was trying to survive him.”

“That’s convenient.”

She stared at the table. “I met Adrian when I worked for Eric. Adrian recruited me to get close to you after Rebecca died. The original plan was simple: marry you, gain influence, help force a sale of your shares.”

“And Noah?”

Her eyes flickered.

“That was my idea.”

I felt sick.

“If I became his guardian, I would have control over distributions from his trust.”

“You hurt a five-year-old because he wouldn’t call you Mom.”

“I know what I did.”

“No. I don’t think you do.”

Her lawyer touched her arm, but Victoria kept talking.

“Martin killed Rebecca. Charles ordered it. Adrian cleaned it up. Eric knew enough to stop it and chose himself instead.”

“Where is Martin?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then why surrender now?”

She finally looked at me.

“Because Martin called me this morning.”

My skin prickled.

“What did he say?”

“That he was going to finish Charles’s last instruction.”

I remembered the video.

Even if Noah is with him?

Especially then.

Victoria swallowed.

“He said he doesn’t need to kill you anymore.”

“Why not?”

“Because he found a cleaner way to take everything.”

My phone buzzed.
