Chapter 10 - THE ENEMY WHO WAITED TWENTY YEARS

Julian Cross had not appeared suddenly.
He had been waiting twenty-three years.
Victor’s letter described him as the broker who arranged bribes in San Esteban.
When the investigation began, Julian disappeared.
Victor took the fall.
Rafael survived.
Julian never forgave either family for leaving him outside the fortune they later rebuilt.
Brenda read the letter in silence.
When she finished, her hands trembled.
“This could be fake.”
“It could.”
I handed it to her.
“Test it.”
She looked at me suspiciously.
“Why would you let me?”
“Because truth that only works when I control it isn’t truth.”
Three independent labs authenticated the ink and paper.
Victor’s old attorney authenticated the handwriting.
Brenda disappeared for a day.
When she returned, she looked hollow.
“I spent my whole life hating the wrong man.”
“Not entirely.”
“My father still committed crimes.”
“Yes.”
“My mother told me Rafael set him up.”
“Maybe she believed it.”
“She made me promise to avenge him.”
I understood how dangerous promises to dead people can become.
Brenda sat across from me.
“What happens now?”
“You testify.”
“Against Andrew?”
“Against Julian.”
She laughed bitterly.
“Andrew will go down too.”
“Yes.”
She looked at her hands.
“I did terrible things.”
“Yes.”
No comforting lie.
She deserved honesty more than pity.
“I helped frame you.”
“Yes.”
“I stole the necklace.”
“Yes.”
“I pushed Andrew toward the fake guardianship.”
“Yes.”
She looked at me.
“Why aren’t you screaming?”
“Because you already know.”
A tear slid down her cheek.
That afternoon, she signed a cooperation agreement.
Then she gave us access to a private messaging account.
Julian had instructed her to destabilize Andrew emotionally.
Make him resent me.
Make him feel controlled.
Encourage hidden spending.
Create evidence that the marriage was collapsing.
Andrew was guilty of every choice he made.
But someone had learned exactly which weaknesses to feed.
The final message from Julian was sent the night Andrew slapped me.
MAKE HER REACT IN FRONT OF WITNESSES.
My stomach tightened.
The necklace.
The accusation.
The mistress.
The slap.
The demand that I kneel.
It was not only cruelty.
It was theater.
Julian wanted a public breakdown.
Andrew wanted obedience.
Brenda wanted revenge.
Margaret wanted humiliation.
Everyone wanted something from me.
Nobody expected me to leave quietly.
That mistake saved me.
Federal agents planned a sting.
Brenda would tell Julian she still had the original San Esteban archive.
He wanted to buy it in person.
The meeting was set at a private hangar.
What we did not know was that Andrew had access to Brenda’s old messages.
He learned about the meeting.
He arrived first.
By the time agents moved in, gunshots echoed from inside the hangar.
I was in the surveillance van when Gabriel shouted.
“Stay here.”
I ignored him.
Inside, Julian stood behind a car.
Brenda was crouched near the wing of a jet.
Andrew held a gun.
Not at Julian.
At Brenda.
“You used me,” he shouted.
Brenda’s face crumpled.
“You used Mariana.”
“That was different.”
“No,” I said from the doorway.
Andrew turned.
His gun followed.
May you like
And for the first time since the mansion, there was no audience he wanted to impress.
Only the truth he could no longer control.
