Chapter 19 - Anna’s Last Trust
Maria thought she had misheard.
“Me?”
Jenna nodded. “Anna kept a list of people who had helped her when they had nothing to gain. Your name was on it.”
Daniel stared at Maria.
Maria remembered the rainy law office, the sleeping child, the coffee, the strange question.
“She knew my name?”
“She asked the receptionist after you left.” Jenna swallowed. “Later she told me, ‘If things go bad, find the woman who said power doesn’t change right and wrong.’”
Maria almost laughed because the sentence sounded too noble for how tired she had been that night.
“I don’t remember saying it like that.”
“She probably cleaned it up.”
For the first time in days, Daniel smiled.
It did not last.
A federal agent returned to the room. “Richard Hale was found dead at his home an hour ago. Apparent suicide.”
Claire stopped smiling too.
“Convenient,” Jenna said.
“Very,” the agent replied.
The next forty-eight hours broke the city open.
News stations published pages from the ledger. Contractors were arrested. Search warrants hit offices before sunrise. Cole was captured at a bus terminal using a fake ID. Ray agreed to cooperate in exchange for a reduced sentence. Claire was charged with attempted murder, kidnapping conspiracy, assault, fraud, and several financial crimes.
Jonathan Mercer was charged with racketeering, bribery, obstruction, and conspiracy connected to Anna’s death.
Daniel resigned from his company before the board could ask him to.
Then came the question no court filing could answer easily.
What happened to Lily now?
Jenna filed for temporary custody based on Anna’s old will.
Daniel did not fight her.
Maria found him sitting alone outside the courthouse.
“You’re giving up?” she asked.
“No.”
“It looks like it.”
He stared at his hands. “I failed Anna. Then I brought Claire into Lily’s life. Maybe loving my daughter means admitting she deserves better than me.”
Maria sat beside him.
“Better than who you were, maybe.”
He looked at her.
“But Lily doesn’t need a perfect father,” Maria said. “She needs one who tells the truth and stays.”
The courthouse doors opened.
Jenna stepped outside holding Lily’s hand.
Lily saw Daniel and ran.
“Daddy!”
He dropped to his knees and caught her.
Jenna watched them for a long moment.
Then she walked toward Maria and handed her a sealed envelope.

Maria looked down at her own name written across the front.
