Chapter 13 - Elena's Secret

Maya replayed the line three times.

Her mother had the files.

Not Vale. Not Julian. Not some forgotten banker.

Elena.

"Where would she keep them?" Derek asked.

Maya shook her head. "She has moved four times since Dad died."

Julian pushed himself higher against the pillows and immediately regretted it.

"Think about what never moved."

Maya looked at him.

"Objects," he said. "Something she kept through every apartment."

"Her sewing machine. Family photos. A wooden recipe box."

She stopped.

The recipe box.

Her mother had carried it into the hospital during her surgery because she did not trust the landlord to leave it alone.

"It's at St. Agnes," Maya said.

Derek was already moving.

They reached the assisted-living facility before sunset.

Elena's room had been searched after the kidnapping, but whoever had done it had looked for obvious hiding places.

Maya opened the old wooden recipe box.

Index cards filled the top.

She removed them.

Nothing.

Julian, against medical advice and wearing a dark coat over his bandage, watched from the doorway.

"You're supposed to be in bed," Maya said.

"I was. Hated it."

She pressed along the inside walls of the box.

One panel shifted.

Behind it was a flash drive wrapped in wax paper.

Derek stared. "Twelve years in a recipe box."

Maya almost laughed. "My mother never trusted the cloud."

They plugged it into an offline laptop.

Folders opened.

Thousands of scanned contracts. Names. Medical records. Payment schedules. Recorded threats. Judges, doctors, collection agencies, shell companies.

Black Harbor's entire history.

Enough to bury Vale.

Enough to bury half the old Croft organization too.

Julian read silently.

Maya watched him.

"Your father is in there."

"I know."

"So are you."

His eyes lifted.

A folder carried his name.

Inside were wire transfers from companies Julian had controlled in his twenties.

Money routed into Black Harbor.

Maya's stomach dropped.

"You funded it."

"I didn't know what it was."

"How convenient."

"Maya."

"You always have a reason."

Julian looked at the dates. "These transfers were authorized with my signature."

"That's what I said."

"I didn't sign these."

Derek leaned closer. "You sure?"

"Yes."

Nico, standing behind them, went pale.

Julian noticed.

"What?"

Nico swallowed.

"Back then your father sometimes had documents signed for you."

"By who?"

Nico looked at the floor.

"Me."

The room went silent.

"He said it was temporary cash movement," Nico whispered. "I was nineteen. I thought I was helping family."

Maya stared at him. "Everybody in this family keeps saying that."

Derek's phone rang.

He answered, listened, then lowered it.

"Vale just released a video. Public."

He turned the screen around.

Adrian Vale sat beside Elena.

"Julian Croft has one hour," Vale said to the camera. "Bring me Rafael's files, or Maya Torres watches her mother die live on the internet."
