Chapter 14 - Elena After the Funeral

I had watched Elena's coffin go into the ground.

I had touched the polished wood.

I had spent seven years talking to a grave.

Now an officer was telling me there was a photograph of my wife alive six months after the crash.

"Send it."

The image arrived seconds later.

Elena sat at a cafe window wearing a blue scarf. Her hair was shorter. A newspaper lay on the table beside her. The date was visible.

June 14.

Six months after I buried her.

My hands started shaking.

Ethan looked up at me. "Dad?"

I couldn't let him see.

I stepped away.

Arthur saw the photo over my shoulder and closed his eyes.

"You knew."

He didn't answer.

I grabbed his coat.

"You knew she lived."

Ethan shouted, "Dad!"

I released him.

Arthur leaned against the railing, pale from blood loss.

"For eight months," he said. "Then she really died."

The words struck harder than any bullet.

"Explain."

"Frank sabotaged the car, but Elena figured out something was wrong before the crash. She escaped before it caught fire. The body inside belonged to a woman Frank had already killed to make identification difficult."

"That's impossible."

"Your father's old network made impossible things routine."

"Why didn't she come home?"

Arthur looked at Ethan.

"Because Frank told her if she did, he'd kill the boy. She went into hiding while we built the ledger case. She thought she could come back once Frank was arrested."

"And eight months later?"

Arthur's voice softened.

"Cancer. Aggressive. She died in Montreal."

I couldn't breathe.

My wife had survived murder and then died alone because she was trying to protect us.

"She wrote to you," Arthur said. "Dozens of letters. Frank intercepted most of them. One made it through. The one Sophia kept."

I wanted to hate Elena for not trusting me.

I wanted to hate Arthur for helping her disappear.

Mostly, I hated myself for the years I had spent believing she chose to leave me.

Quinn interrupted.

"We have a hit on Frank's emergency passport."

I looked at her.

"Where?"

"Private airfield in Westchester. Jet scheduled for 2:10 a.m."

Luca checked his watch.

"He'll go for Sophia's box first."

Sophia's face went white.

Then Lily, still on the phone beside her mother, said softly,

"Mommy... I know where the lady hid another letter."
