Chapter 18 - The Last Witness

The photograph had been taken by Laura Hale.

Victor’s late wife.

Except Laura wasn’t dead.

Helen had been told she died abroad fifteen years earlier.

In reality, Laura had entered a witness protection arrangement during an unrelated fraud investigation and later left the program under a new name.

“She knew Victor before all of this,” Helen said. “She knew what he was capable of.”

Reese traced the message through a lawyer in Oregon.

By afternoon, Laura Hale appeared on a secure video call.

She looked older, tired, and furious.

“I saw the news,” she said. “I knew Victor would finally burn.”

Michael asked, “What do you know about my father?”

Laura took a long breath.

“Victor had been stealing before Sophia was old enough to understand the company. Thomas caught him once, ten years before the crash.”

“Why didn’t Dad fire him?”

“Because Victor threatened to expose a tax fraud Thomas believed Helen had committed.”

Helen shook her head. “I never—”

“I know,” Laura said. “Victor forged that too.”

Emily whispered, “He built cages out of fake evidence.”

Laura nodded. “That was his talent.”

Then she delivered the final piece.

“Thomas called me the night he died.”

Michael leaned toward the screen.

“What did he say?”

“He said he finally had enough proof to put Victor in prison. He said Sophia had been pulled into it but he still believed she could walk away.”

Michael’s throat tightened.

“Did he say anything else?”

Laura looked down.

“He said if anything happened to him, tell Michael not to confuse loyalty with love.”

The room became still.

Michael looked at Emily.

That sentence could have been written for the man he became on the staircase.

Laura sent Reese the original recording of Thomas’s call.

It confirmed timeline, motive, and Victor’s threats.

By evening prosecutors added conspiracy and homicide-related charges.

Sophia’s attorney began discussing cooperation.

Mercer refused.

Victor said nothing.

Emily’s contractions slowed.

For the first time in days, the baby seemed willing to wait.

Michael sat beside the bed.

“I used loyalty as an excuse not to see Sophia clearly.”

Emily looked at him.

“And I used anger as an excuse to hurt you.”

“Yes.”

“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”

“Good.”

He almost smiled.

Then Detective Reese entered with an evidence bag.

Inside was Sophia’s burner phone.

“We unlocked it.”

Michael stood.

“There’s a scheduled message she wrote before the warehouse.”

“To who?”

Reese looked at Mason sleeping in the chair.

“To him.”

Emily’s face tightened.

“What does it say?”

Reese hesitated.

Then read it.
