Chapter 6 - A Dead Man's Key

William Ashbourne had been dead for eighteen months.

So when Henry said William's access code had opened the archive at 2:03 a.m., nobody spoke for several seconds.

"Codes can be copied," Torres said.

Henry nodded. "But this one required a physical key."

Daniel felt a cold pressure behind his ribs.

"Where was the key?"

"Buried with your father."

Rachel stared at him. "You're joking."

Henry wasn't.

By eight that morning, police were at the Ashbourne family mausoleum.

The lock showed fresh scratches.

Inside, William's stone crypt had been disturbed.

Daniel turned away as workers opened it. Whatever anger he had toward his father, he had never imagined standing in a cold marble room while police searched his coffin for evidence.

The key was gone.

But something else was there.

A sealed envelope rested beneath William's folded hands.

Daniel's name was written across the front.

He opened it outside.

Son,

If you are reading this, then your mother has learned about Lillian's trust and I failed to stop her.

Daniel read the line twice.

Rachel whispered, "Keep going."

William's letter described years of hidden debts, shell companies, and losses Celeste had covered by borrowing against family assets. She had built a public image of perfect wealth while quietly burning through millions.

The trust would remove her last source of control.

Then came the line that made Daniel sit down on the mausoleum step.

Celeste did not act alone.

I discovered the identity of the person helping her. I confronted him the night of my heart attack.

"Him," Torres said. "Martin?"

Daniel kept reading.

I hid proof where your mother would never look: behind the portrait she hates most.

Daniel knew exactly which portrait.

His grandmother Lillian hung in the east gallery, wearing a plain blue dress. Celeste had called it ugly for as long as he could remember.

They raced back to the house.

The portrait was gone.

Only a pale rectangle remained on the wall.

On the floor beneath it was a fresh smear of blood.

And from behind the wall came a faint sound.

Three knocks.

Someone was trapped inside.
