Chapter 17 - G-18

G-18 was named Hope.

Of course she was.

Every terrible project used beautiful names.

Nora's son had smuggled the photograph out before he died.

The nurse holding Hope was identified as Paige Wynn.

Russell's sister.

Missing for eighteen months.

Elena stared at the image.

"Paige disagreed with Russell."

"Then why was she there?" Elias asked.

"Because leaving Haven wasn't simple."

Mara traced Paige to a small town in Maine.

No phone.

No bank account.

One property rented in cash.

Elias said, "We go."

Elena shook her head.

"Federal agents go."

He smiled.

"You're learning."

Three years earlier he would have hired private security and demanded control.

Now he called the case agent.

Within a day, Paige surrendered.

She was thin, exhausted, and carrying a toddler.

Hope.

Paige cried when Elena entered the interview room.

"I tried to get her out."

Elena sat across from her.

"Why didn't you come to me?"

"Russell told me you were dead."

Elias flinched.

The lie had been used everywhere.

Paige explained that G-18 did not share Grace's regenerative expression.

She had something else.

Resistance.

The children had not been steps toward one miracle.

They were different outcomes from the same reckless program.

Hope's immune system rejected the Lazarus signal entirely.

Elena leaned back.

"She may be the key to stopping it."

Elias thought of his arrhythmias.

"Stopping what?"

"The protein in your body."

For the first time, G-18 was not valuable because she could cure.

She was valuable because she could protect.

Elias laughed softly.

"What?"

Elena smiled.

"You hate irony."

"I paid billions trying to make a cure, and the thing that may save me is the child who can't be changed."

Paige looked at him.

"Will you leave her alone?"

The question was fair.

Elias answered without hesitation.

"Yes."

Elena corrected him.

"We'll ask what testing is medically necessary. No patents. No ownership claims. Independent oversight."

Paige began to cry.

"Thank you."

Elias looked at Hope playing with a paper cup.

It struck him that every adult in the room had once confused access with entitlement.

The hardest lesson had been simple.

A child could matter to science and still belong only to herself.

That night, Elias signed papers dissolving the last private rights Vance Biomedical held over Lazarus subject samples.

Then Mara called.

"Turn on the news."

Russell Wynn had escaped federal transport.

May you like

And he had left one message behind.

I'M GOING HOME.
