Elias used the wheelchair again.
For three weeks.
Nobody said it was temporary.
Nobody said permanent.
Elena would not let anyone turn uncertainty into a promise.
Russell pleaded not guilty.
Celeste negotiated cooperation.
Samuel faced sentencing.
Frank testified and then disappeared from the Vance family's life by mutual agreement.
Paige and Hope entered protection.
Mara won awards she pretended not to care about.
Ruby enrolled in school and immediately got detention for correcting a teacher.
Caleb learned soccer.
Tomas started transplant evaluation.
Grace learned to say "no."
Frequently.
Elias considered that her greatest gift.
His own treatment stabilized the regenerative signal.
Some movement returned.
Not enough to walk safely.
One afternoon, Grace crawled toward his chair.
Everyone froze.
Elias saw the fear.
Not in her.
In them.
He lifted a hand.
"No."
Mateo looked at him.
"She just wants you."
"I know."
Grace reached his knee.
Elias picked her up before her hand could rest there.
She protested.
"No!"
He smiled.
"Exactly."
He kissed her forehead.
"No more healing Grandpa."
Elena leaned against the doorway.
"You okay?"
Elias looked at his legs.
Then at Grace.
"Yes."
He meant it.
Later that week, Tomas received a donor match.
The surgery lasted seven hours.
Mateo paced until Elias threatened to tape him to a chair.
When the surgeon finally came out smiling, the entire family broke at once.
Tomas survived.
Months later, he walked into the Vance kitchen with a scar and a terrible appetite.
They celebrated with pizza.
Elias ate two slices.
Then Nora Bell called.
Her son's belongings had been released from evidence.
One item was addressed to Elias.
A small notebook.
Mr. Vance, if you ever learn what happened, don't build a better Haven.
Build something where kids can leave.
Elias read it twice.
Then he called Elena.
"I know what we do next."
"What?"
"We give the building away."
"Which building?"
