Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN IN HANDCUFFS

Back at the hotel, the woman in custody finally gave her name.
“Evelyn Price.”
Arthur stared through the interrogation-room glass.
Eleanor had never mentioned a twin.
Evelyn rubbed her wrists.
“She paid me to appear at public events when she needed an alibi.”
Maya entered the room.
“And tonight?”
“She told me to carry the purse and argue with the waitress.”
“You knew the purse contained poison.”
“No. I thought it held fake evidence.”
Captain Brooks placed a photo of Clara on the table.
“Where did Eleanor take her?”
Evelyn’s expression cracked.
“You found out she’s alive.”
Julian leaned forward.
“Tell me where my mother is.”
Evelyn looked at him for a long moment.
“Sterling Ridge Recovery Center. Vermont. Private wing.”
Arthur called the facility.
The administrator said Clara Vale had been transferred that morning.
Destination unknown.
Gabriel traced Reed’s car through traffic cameras.
It was heading toward a private airfield outside the city.
“They’re moving her tonight,” Maya said.
Arthur’s board meeting began in forty minutes.
Without him present, Eleanor’s allies could still approve the share transfer using forged documents.
Julian looked at his father.
“You go save the company.”
Arthur shook his head.
“I’m going to save Clara.”
“Then who stops the vote?”
Maya closed the Vale Foundation file.
“I do.”
Arthur frowned.
“You don’t have standing.”
She held up Clara’s original trust agreement.
“As Clara’s nearest living relative, I control the shares Eleanor has been stealing for twenty-two years.”
Gabriel checked the numbers.
“Maya doesn’t just have standing.”
May you like
He looked up.
“She owns the deciding vote.”
