Chapter 17 - The Vault Under the River

The warehouse looked abandoned from the outside.

Inside, Julian had power, cameras, and armed men.

Daniel entered carrying a decoy bracelet and a sealed envelope.

Claire stayed with Morris in a surveillance van two blocks away.

Julian stepped from the shadows.

"Where are my papers?"

"Where are my children?"

Julian smiled.

"Safe for the moment."

He still did not know.

Daniel held up the envelope.

"Trust key."

Julian's eyes moved to the bracelet.

"And the star."

"Why do you want it?"

"Your father hid the vault access seed inside it. Claire found it before I did."

Daniel understood.

The microSD card was not only evidence.

It contained an encryption key.

"What's in the vault?"

Julian laughed.

"Everything your father was too cowardly to destroy. Off-book payments. Overseas accounts. People he bribed. People he protected."

"Including you."

"Especially me."

Daniel stepped closer.

"You drugged him."

Julian's face flattened.

"He was going to confess."

"You kidnapped Claire."

"She found the archive."

"You planned to kill both of us."

Julian sighed.

"Death certificates are cleaner than bodies. Probate courts don't ask emotional questions."

The words went directly to Morris's recorder.

Daniel held his breath.

Enough.

Then Julian smiled.

"The problem is, I know Noah escaped."

Daniel's stomach dropped.

Julian pressed a remote.

Metal shutters slammed down over the warehouse doors.

"I have one last piece of leverage."

A side door opened.

Evelyn was pushed into the room by Marcus's older brother.

Her wrists were tied.

Daniel stared.

"Mom."

Julian pointed toward a stairwell.

"Open the vault."

"No."

"Then Evelyn dies knowing the truth finally cost her something."

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

"Don't."

Julian raised the gun.

Then Claire's voice came from the warehouse speakers.

"You always forget one thing, Julian."

His head snapped up.

Claire continued:

"This building belonged to my husband before it ever belonged to you."

The lights went out.

And the vault door began opening by itself.
