Chapter 3 - The Call From Claire

"Claire?"

The line crackled.

Daniel pressed the phone against his ear.

"Claire, where are you?"

A man shouted in the background.

The woman gasped.

"Gray--"

The call ended.

Daniel called back.

The number did not exist.

Maya sat on the edge of the desk, shaking.

"That was her."

"I know my wife's voice."

Noah stepped closer. "Mom's alive?"

Daniel looked at his son.

He wanted to say yes.

He wanted to promise.

Instead he said, "I think she might be."

Lily started crying.

Daniel hugged both children while Maya watched the front windows.

"We can't stay here," she said.

"Why?"

"Because the people who made that certificate know the house better than you do."

That sentence cut.

Daniel had spent the last seven months sleeping in hotels half the week, chasing tips, meeting investigators, keeping Carter Medical Systems alive. Vanessa had stayed here.

With his children.

"Tell me everything."

Maya pointed to the flash drive.

Daniel inserted it into an offline laptop.

A single video file appeared.

Claire filled the screen.

She looked exhausted.

"Daniel, if you're watching this, I ran out of time. Vanessa is working with someone inside Carter Medical. They're using my disappearance to trigger the family trust. If I'm legally declared dead, my voting shares transfer temporarily to you. If something then happens to you, control passes to the emergency guardian listed for the children."

Daniel's blood went cold.

"Vanessa," Maya whispered.

Claire continued.

"She had me sign a stack of school and medical forms after Emma was born. I later discovered one page was a guardianship nomination. My signature was copied onto other documents."

Daniel looked at the death certificate.

Eight days.

Claire leaned closer to the camera.

"Do not trust the death certificate. Do not trust Dr. Voss. And if Vanessa tells you I left willingly, ask her what happened at Grayhaven on March fourteenth."

The video ended.

Daniel checked the calendar.

March fourteenth was the day Claire disappeared.

Then Maya's face tightened.

"There's more."

"What?"

She pointed to the file properties.

The video had been modified yesterday.

Someone had opened Claire's hidden drive less than twenty-four hours ago.
