CHAPTER 2: THE WOMAN BEHIND THE MASK

For several seconds, nobody moved.
The pool lights reflected across Bianca’s face.
But the confidence she had moments earlier was gone.
“Julian…”
Her voice shook.
“Baby, you’re home.”
Julian stared at her.
Not with anger.
Not with sadness.
With disappointment.
“That’s what you’re going to say?”
Bianca swallowed.
“You misunderstood.”
Julian walked closer.
“My mother was drowning.”
“She fell.”
“No.”
His voice became colder.
“She was pushed.”
Bianca looked toward Martha.
Then back at Julian.
“You’re really going to believe her over me?”
Martha looked hurt.
Not because Bianca betrayed her.
But because Julian almost married someone capable of doing this.
“I heard you,” Julian said.
Bianca’s face changed.
“You heard what?”
“Everything.”
The silence that followed was terrifying.
Bianca quickly changed tactics.
She started crying.
“I was scared. I didn’t know what to do.”
Julian looked at her.
“You were scared?”
He pointed toward the pool.
“My 78-year-old mother was fighting for her life.”
Bianca said nothing.
Julian jumped into the pool and pulled Martha out.
“Mom, are you okay?”
Martha held onto him.
Her hands shaking.
“I tried to tell you.”
Julian closed his eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
But Bianca wasn’t finished.
As the ambulance arrived, she quietly stepped away.
She thought nobody noticed.
But Julian did.
Because while everyone was focused on Martha…
Bianca deleted something from her phone.
A message.
A name.
A conversation.
Julian saw it.
And his stomach dropped.
Because Bianca wasn’t working alone.
The next morning, Julian hired a private investigator.
The truth came back faster than he expected.
Bianca had spent months building a story.
She told neighbors Martha was becoming unstable.
She told friends Julian’s mother was losing her memory.
She even convinced doctors to question Martha’s mental state.
She wasn’t trying to steal a house.
She was trying to erase a person.
Then Julian received one final piece of evidence.
A security recording from three weeks earlier.
The footage showed Bianca entering Martha’s room.
Holding a small bottle.
Julian watched the video.
And whispered:
“What were you planning to do?”
Then the investigator answered.
“Mr. Hale…”
His voice became serious.
“This is much bigger than your mother.”
Julian looked up.
“What do you mean?”
The investigator placed another file on the table.
Inside was Bianca’s real identity.
And the name of the person funding her plan.
Julian opened the file.
His hands froze.
May you like
Because the person behind everything…
Was someone he trusted.
