Chapter 15 - The Tunnel

Richard had forgotten the tunnel existed.

As a child, he and Vanessa used it to sneak from the mansion basement to the conservatory during winter storms. Their father eventually sealed the entrance with a storage wall.

Vanessa had not forgotten.

Police found the hidden door behind shelves in the wine cellar.

The tunnel smelled of earth and rust.

Mara sent officers through quietly while a decoy vehicle approached the conservatory from the main road.

Richard insisted on being part of the exchange.

Anna insisted on staying close enough to see.

Mara hated both decisions.

“At the first sign of trouble, you follow orders.”

Richard nodded.

Anna said, “I will.”

The conservatory was a glass skeleton under moonlight, filled with dead vines and overturned planters.

Vanessa stood in the center.

Mrs. Bell sat in a chair beside her, wrists tied but otherwise unharmed.

Graham was nowhere visible.

Vanessa smiled at Richard.

“You always did bring an audience.”

“Let her go.”

“Trust first.”

Richard held up a document envelope.

Vanessa laughed. “You think I’m stupid?”

“No. I think you’re desperate.”

Her smile disappeared.

“You have no idea what Claire did to me.”

Richard stared at her. “Claire trusted you.”

“She judged me.”

“She found you stealing.”

“I borrowed money from a foundation drowning in cash.”

“You stole from sick children.”

Vanessa’s face twisted. “Don’t say it like that.”

“How should I say it?”

Mrs. Bell suddenly shouted, “Sir, Graham is behind—”

A shot cracked into the ceiling.

Glass rained down.

Graham stepped from behind a stone column holding a handgun.

Anna ducked behind a planter.

Richard froze.

Graham aimed at him. “Envelope.”

Richard slowly lowered it.

Police in the tunnel waited for Mara’s signal.

Then Vanessa did something no one expected.

She grabbed Graham’s wrist.

“What are you doing?” he snapped.

“You said no guns.”

“You said Richard would cooperate.”

Their argument gave Mara the opening.

Officers flooded the conservatory.

Graham fired into the floor and ran.

Vanessa shoved Mrs. Bell’s chair over and sprinted toward the rear door.

Richard went to Mrs. Bell.

Anna chased Vanessa two steps before common sense caught up.

Then Vanessa stopped on her own.

Because Leo was standing in the doorway.

Anna’s blood turned to ice.

He had followed her from the nearby command vehicle.

“Leo!”

Vanessa moved faster.

She scooped him up.

Police stopped.

Every weapon lowered.

Vanessa held the child against her chest.

“Back away,” she said.

Leo stared at her.

Then he did something tiny and brave.

He reached into Vanessa’s coat pocket and pulled out her phone.

The screen was already recording.
