Chapter 12 - The Hidden Recording

Emily barely slept.

By morning, the story had split into two investigations: the paternity fraud and Richard Cole’s death.

Margaret’s lawyer told her not to speak.

Grant’s lawyer did the same.

Ethan stopped answering calls from the board.

At breakfast, Emily found him sitting at the kitchen table staring at the old photograph from the gas station.

“You need to eat,” she said.

“So do you.”

“I’m working on it.”

He looked at her cheek again. “She hit you in this room, and somehow that’s not even the worst thing she did.”

Emily sat across from him. “Don’t make the mistake of ranking damage. One crime doesn’t erase another.”

His eyes softened. “How are you still standing?”

“I’m mad.”

He almost smiled.

Then the doorbell rang.

A courier handed Ethan a small package addressed in Richard’s handwriting.

Ethan froze.

Inside was an old digital voice recorder and a note.

ETHAN - IF THIS EVER REACHES YOU, SOMETHING WENT WRONG. TRUST THE WOMAN WHO IS WILLING TO LOSE THE MONEY.

Emily felt a chill.

The recorder contained one file.

Richard’s voice filled the kitchen.

“If you’re hearing this, Grant knows I found the transfers. Margaret knows too. I gave her a chance to help me expose him. She begged me to keep it private.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Richard continued.

“She believes protecting the Cole name matters more than protecting people. That belief will destroy us if no one stops it.”

There was a pause, then breathing.

“The trust amendment moves control to Ethan when his first child is born because I need the company out of Margaret’s hands. If Ethan has built a family by then, maybe he’ll understand that legacy is not the same thing as love.”

Emily covered her mouth.

The final seconds were distorted.

Then Richard said, “If Grant finds out I copied the ledger, I’m in danger.”

The recording ended.

Ethan stared at the device.

“Ledger?”

Emily remembered Grant’s office. The trust folder. The careful labels.

Then her phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

YOUR HUSBAND IS SEARCHING THE WRONG HOUSE.
