Chapter 19 - The Choice

For three seconds, Ethan stared down at Grant.
Three seconds was long enough to imagine letting go.
Long enough to imagine Richard’s last minutes.
Long enough to imagine Emily’s bruised face and Nora bleeding on the floor.
Then Ethan dropped to his knees and grabbed Grant’s wrist.
“Take my hand.”
Grant stared at him in disbelief.
“Why?”
“Because I’m not you.”
Police reached them seconds later.
Grant was pulled onto the platform and handcuffed.
The fire department recovered the metal case before the flames destroyed the loading bay.
Inside were records linking Grant to the foundation theft, payments to Nora, the attack at her apartment, the attempted abduction, and Richard’s death.
The tire iron contained traces preserved beneath old corrosion.
Richard’s DNA.
Margaret was arrested that night.
Not for murder, but for conspiracy, evidence tampering, obstruction, fraud, and her role in concealing Richard’s death.
The assault on Emily was added too.
When Ethan returned to the hospital, smoke-stained and exhausted, Emily slapped his shoulder.
He blinked. “Ow.”
“That was for going alone.”
“Fair.”
Then she pulled him into her arms and cried into his jacket.
“I thought you were dead.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Do not ever make me say that twice.”
“I won’t.”
A month later, prosecutors announced charges publicly.
The Cole board demanded Ethan take temporary control under emergency provisions.
He almost refused.
Emily reminded him of Richard’s recording.
“Your father didn’t move those shares because he wanted you rich,” she said. “He wanted someone to stop the cycle.”
Ethan accepted on one condition: an outside forensic audit and a permanent independent ethics committee.
The newspapers called it a family civil war.
Emily called it cleaning the basement.
Margaret requested a visit before her plea hearing.
Emily refused.
Ethan went once.
When he returned, he looked strangely calm.
“What did she say?” Emily asked.
“She asked if I hated her.”
“What did you say?”
“I said I loved the mother I thought I had. I don’t know what to do with the woman she chose to become.”
Emily took his hand.
Then her face changed.
Ethan stood instantly. “What?”
She looked down.
A warm rush spread across the floor.
Emily laughed and cried at the same time.
“My water just broke.”
Ethan’s eyes went wide.
“Today?”
“No, Ethan. Next Thursday.”
May you like
Then the first real contraction hit.
And this time, there was no one left in the family they trusted to call.
