Chapter 19 - The First Account

The first North Crown account had been opened ten years earlier.
Before the missing money.
Before Charles Vance's death.
Before Julian married Victoria.
Julian knew because his name appeared on the formation documents.
"I was twenty-eight," he said. "My father asked me to sign a stack of restructuring papers during the recession. I didn't read all of them."
Victoria stared at him.
"You signed a shell company into existence and forgot?"
"I signed hundreds of documents that year. That's not an excuse. It's the truth."
Naomi pulled the archived formation packet.
Julian's signature was genuine.
Charles's was genuine too.
North Crown had not begun as theft.
It began as a defensive vehicle designed to buy Vance debt cheaply during a downturn.
A legal strategy.
Then Eleanor and Graham took control of it.
They used company money to feed the vehicle, hid ownership, and turned protection into a private takeover machine.
Victoria exhaled.
"So your father created the weapon."
"And my mother learned how to use it."
Detective Chen called with final news.
Mercer had survived surgery.
Facing attempted murder, kidnapping, conspiracy, and racketeering charges, he had started talking.
He confirmed Eleanor ordered the intimidation of Charles but denied being told to disable the brakes.
He also confirmed Graham later paid him to make the failure real.
Graham had feared Charles would expose the theft and send him to prison.
That made Graham the likely architect of Charles's death.
Eleanor was not innocent.
But she had not ordered the murder.
Julian sat with that complicated truth for a long time.
"Do you feel better?" Victoria asked.
"No."
"Good. I would worry if you did."
He looked at her.
She smiled faintly.
Three weeks later, prosecutors announced charges.
Graham Pierce faced murder, fraud, conspiracy, and embezzlement counts.
Caleb Mercer faced kidnapping and attempted murder charges in addition to conspiracy.
Malcolm Sterling faced fraud, breach-of-fiduciary-duty charges, and unlawful disclosure of confidential financial information.
Eleanor faced assault, conspiracy, obstruction, fraud, and forgery-related counts.
The Vance Industries board removed her permanently.
Sterling's emergency financing closed under new oversight.
Employees were paid.
Credit lines reopened.
The company survived.
But Julian refused to call that victory.
One evening, he stood in the nursery holding his daughter while Victoria rested in the rocking chair.
"What do we name something after all this?" he asked.
Victoria looked at the baby.
"Something that doesn't belong to either family."
They chose Hope.
Julian smiled.
Then his phone rang.
It was the prison facility.

His mother's voice came through.
"Julian, I need to tell you where the rest of the money is."
