Chapter 3 - The Name Behind Sterling

At the hospital, Julian sat beside Victoria's bed with the Sterling papers on his lap.

The contractions had slowed.

The baby was stable.

Neither of them felt relieved enough to say it.

"You own Sterling Global," Julian said.

Victoria stared at the ceiling.

"Yes."

"The Sterling Global?"

"There isn't another one."

He gave a humorless laugh.

Sterling Global was a private investment conglomerate with ports, logistics, insurance, construction, and energy holdings across four continents. Financial reporters guessed its controlling family was worth billions, but the ownership structure had always been hidden behind trusts.

Julian had spent years negotiating with Sterling subsidiaries without knowing his wife sat at the top of the structure.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I wanted you to marry me, not my balance sheet."

"We've been married four years."

"And for four years your mother has called me a social climber."

Julian looked away.

That landed harder than she intended.

"I should have stopped her."

"Yes."

He nodded once.

No defense.

No excuse.

Victoria's anger softened, but only slightly.

"My grandfather built Sterling. When he died, control passed to a trust. I became the sole voting beneficiary at thirty. The trustees manage most of it, but I control strategic transfers."

Julian touched the emergency financing letter.

"You were going to put sixty million into Vance Industries."

"Only if the audit cleared the company."

"And if it didn't?"

"Sterling would buy the secured debt, protect the employees, and let the bad assets collapse."

Julian went still.

"Including my family's shares?"

"If those shares were tied to fraud, yes."

He stood and walked to the window.

Victoria watched him wrestle with the difference between loyalty and denial.

"My mother knew?" he asked.

"She learned two days ago."

"How?"

"I don't know."

"And today she invited you to the house?"

"She said she wanted to apologize and talk about the financing."

Julian turned.

"You went alone?"

"I thought she was finally ready to be reasonable."

He looked at her belly.

"Victoria."

"Don't. I already know it was stupid."

His phone rang.

Graham Pierce.

Julian stared at the screen.

Victoria said, "Answer it."

He did.

"Graham."

A strained voice came through the speaker.

"Julian, where are you?"

"Hospital."

Silence.

"Is Victoria all right?"

Julian's eyes met hers.

"How did you know she was hurt?"

Another silence.

Longer.

"Your mother called me."

"When?"

"A few minutes ago."

Julian checked the time.

Eleanor had been in police custody for nearly forty minutes.

"Try again," Julian said.

Graham exhaled.

"We need to talk before you go to the office."

"Why?"

"Because there are investigators here."

"I know."

"No, Julian. You don't understand. They aren't looking for the money."

Victoria sat up slightly.

Julian tightened his grip on the phone.

"Then what are they looking for?"

May you like

Graham's voice dropped.

"Your signature."
