Chapter 7 - The Escalante Headquarters

In the heart of Manhattan, the sixty-second floor of the Escalante Tower offered a panoramic view of the bustling city below.
Marcus Escalante—a tall, silver-haired man in his late sixties with eyes as sharp as cut glass—stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, swirling a glass of scotch. As the private elevator chimed and Mariana stepped into the office, his stern expression melted into a warm, proud smile.
"They're out, then?" Marcus asked, walking over to embrace his daughter.
"They're out," Mariana confirmed, resting her head against his shoulder for a brief moment before stepping back. "The corporate assets have been absorbed back into the primary trust, and Vance Logistics is currently being dismantled by the liquidation committee."
Marcus chuckled, shaking his head. "I told you four years ago when you wanted to marry that ambitious little accountant's son—people who build their worth on other people's foundations always forget how gravity works."
"I wanted to give him a chance," Mariana said quietly, walking over to her own desk where a stack of new acquisition files waited. "I wanted to know what it felt like to be loved for myself, not for my last name."
"And did you?" Marcus asked gently.
Mariana looked down at her hand, tracing the faint outline where her wedding ring used to sit before she tossed it into the mansion's fountain on her way out.
"No," she said, her voice steady and clear. "But I learned something much more valuable."
"What's that?"
"Power looks much better on me than mercy ever did."
Marcus smiled, raising his glass in a silent toast to his daughter. "The board meeting for the European expansion starts in ten minutes, Madam Chairwoman. Shall we show them how an empire is really run?"

Mariana sat down in the executive leather chair, unlocked her terminal, and straightened her jacket.
"Let's begin," she said.
