Chapter 11 - The Night Olivia Died

Victor ended the call and looked at Lily.

"What envelope?"

Lily slowly set Ethan into Rosa's arms.

"I didn't know Olivia. Not personally."

"That's not what I asked."

"My older sister, Hannah, did. She worked at the foundation."

Victor sat down.

Lily continued. "The week before Olivia died, Hannah told me she was scared. She said Mrs. Blackwood had discovered something involving Serena and a doctor. After the crash, Hannah quit and moved to Vermont."

"And the envelope?"

"Hannah received one in the mail two days after Olivia died. She never opened it. She was terrified."

Daniel leaned forward. "Where is it?"

"In a bank box under both our names."

Victor's anger rose, but this time he caught it before it became accusation.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Lily looked directly at him. "Because when I took this job, I didn't know Serena was the same Serena. Hannah only called her 'S.' And after I figured it out, I had no proof you would believe me."

Victor looked away.

He had no right to argue.

They went to the bank with police.

Inside the envelope was a memory card and a handwritten note from Olivia to Hannah.

If anything happens to me, make sure Victor sees this when he is ready to see people as they are, not as he needs them to be.

Victor closed his eyes briefly.

The memory card contained photographs taken from Olivia's car.

Serena meeting Dr. Pike.

Grant exchanging an envelope with a mechanic.

And one image that made Daniel stand up.

Serena beside Olivia's car, crouched near the front wheel.

"Can you enlarge that?" Victor asked.

The officer did.

Serena appeared to be holding a small tool.

Another photograph showed Grant looking directly toward Olivia's camera.

Then the final file loaded.

A video.

It was dark and shaky.

Olivia's voice whispered, "I'm recording this because they followed me."

Headlights appeared behind her.

A second car moved close.

Too close.

Olivia screamed.

The image spun.

Then black.

The timestamp ended thirteen minutes before the crash was reported.

Nobody spoke.

Victor felt something inside him collapse.

Then Daniel pointed at the corner of the final frame.

"Wait."

The pursuing car had passed under a streetlight.

For one second, the license plate was visible.

The police officer ran it.

The vehicle had been registered to Blackwood Corporate Security.

Assigned driver:

Grant Keller.

Victor stood.

"Find him."

The officer's phone rang at that exact moment.

He answered, listened, then looked at Victor.

"We may have."

"Where?"

"At your private airfield."

May you like

Victor's stomach dropped.

Because Ethan's travel passport was missing from the house safe.
