Chapter 20 - Home Before Dark

Account nineteen was not another theft.

It was worse in a different way.

Daniel had created it after Olivia died and quietly returned nearly eight hundred thousand dollars of suspicious foundation money before anyone noticed it was missing.

He had known more than he admitted.

Not enough to prove murder.

Enough to know Serena was dangerous.

"Why didn't you tell me?" Victor asked him in the empty courthouse hallway.

Daniel looked older than Victor had ever seen him.

"Because I was afraid you would ask what I had signed. And then I would have to admit I helped make the theft possible through negligence."

"So you hid it."

"Yes."

Victor nodded slowly.

There was a time when he would have protected Daniel because of history, loyalty, or shame.

That version of Victor was gone.

"Tell the prosecutor everything."

Daniel closed his eyes. "I will."

Six months later, Blackwood House felt like a different place.

The old nursery was no longer locked.

Olivia's rocking chair sat by the window again. Her photographs were back on the shelves. Nobody spoke about her in whispers.

Ethan was twenty months old and had developed an obsession with opening every cabinet he could reach.

One Saturday afternoon, Victor found him in the kitchen trying to wear a mixing bowl as a hat.

"That's not what that's for," Victor said.

Ethan laughed.

Lily leaned in through the doorway. "He disagrees."

Victor looked up.

She had stopped wearing the Blackwood staff uniform months ago. Today she carried a stack of folders from the foundation.

"You're working on Saturday?"

"You're judging me for working too much?"

"Fair."

She placed the folders on the counter.

The rebuilt foundation now funded independent child advocates, domestic staff reporting lines, and legal support for caregivers who reported abuse by powerful employers.

The first program had been Lily's idea.

Rosa called from the garden.

"Victor! Ethan has no shoes!"

Victor looked down.

The child had somehow removed both sneakers.

"How does he do that?"

Lily smiled. "Maybe ask the billionaire father."

Victor laughed for the first time that day.

Then Ethan ran toward the garden.

Victor followed.

He caught him before the steps and lifted him high.

For one brief second, the sound brought him back to that terrible morning: Ethan crying on marble, Lily begging Serena to stop, the little red light blinking under the table.

But memory no longer owned the room.

Ethan squealed and grabbed Victor's collar.

"Dada!"

"I'm here."

This time, Victor understood what those words required.

Not money.

Not security guards.

Not a famous last name.

Presence.

Attention.

The willingness to believe the person with less power when the person with more power insists everything is fine.

Lily stepped into the garden beside them.

Victor looked toward Olivia's favorite roses, blooming along the stone wall.

"I used to think coming home meant walking through the door," he said.

Lily glanced at him. "And now?"

Victor looked at Ethan.

"Now I think it means noticing who's waiting on the other side."

A car stopped at the front gate.

For an instant, Victor's body tightened.

Then Rosa checked the monitor and smiled.

"It's Hannah."

Lily relaxed.

Ethan clapped.

The gates opened.

The house filled with ordinary noise - footsteps, laughter, a child yelling for no reason at all.

Victor carried his son inside before dark.

And for the first time in a long time, nobody in Blackwood House was afraid of what would happen when the door closed.
