Chapter 1 - The Voice From the Grave

“Don’t sign it yet!”

The little girl’s voice cut through the Moretti ballroom like a gunshot.

Vincent Moretti’s silver pen stopped above the last page of the engagement agreement. Around him, crystal glasses, white roses, and polished marble seemed to freeze with everyone else.

Emily Carter stood near the service doors, eight years old, thin as a bookmark, clutching a cracked blue phone in both hands.

“You need to hear what the dead lady said first,” she added.

Her mother, Grace, went so pale that Vincent knew this was not a child’s joke.

“Emily,” Grace whispered. “Come here. Now.”

Charles Bellamy, Vincent’s attorney for seventeen years, pushed back from the table. His smile appeared a fraction too fast.

“Mr. Moretti, this is clearly a misunderstanding. The child found an old device. We can deal with it after—”

Emily pressed Play.

Static filled the room.

Then breathing.

A woman’s breathing. Weak. Shaky. Real.

Vincent’s body locked before the first sentence finished.

“Vince, if Bellamy is in the room, don’t say another word.”

The pen slipped from his fingers and clicked against marble.

Isabella Romano, dressed in ivory, grabbed the silver pendant at her throat. Dominic Moretti, Vincent’s cousin and operations chief, stared at the phone like it was a bomb.

Charles stopped smiling.

Vincent could not move.

“Sofia,” he said.

The name scraped out of him.

His wife had vanished three years earlier. No body. No ransom. Only a goodbye message and a trail of legal documents proving she had chosen to disappear.

Or so Bellamy had told him.

The recording continued.

“If you’re hearing this, I ran out of time. The papers aren’t about the wedding. They’re about control of the family trust. Don’t sign anything Bellamy gives you. And, Vince…”

A distant bang sounded on the message. Sofia gasped.

Then another voice, muffled but close.

A man.

“Give me the phone.”

Emily looked up at Vincent.

The recording ended.

Vincent turned slowly toward Charles.

“Who was that?”

Charles swallowed. “I have no idea.”

Vincent’s stare shifted to the papers. He ripped the top page away, then the next, scanning sections he had trusted Charles to summarize.

On page twelve, buried under language about continuity and estate protection, he found an irrevocable transfer provision.

If signed, voting authority over the Moretti family trust would move to a three-person board.

Charles Bellamy.

Dominic Moretti.

And Isabella Romano.

Vincent looked up.

Dominic had already taken one step toward the door.

“Don’t,” Vincent said.

Dominic stopped.

Outside, somewhere beyond the tall windows, tires screamed across the gravel drive.

Then the estate lights went out.
