Chapter 13 - The Warrant

Vincent stared at Tony.
“For what?”
“Money laundering. Conspiracy. Murder.”
Dominic gave a bitter laugh. “Bellamy.”
Sofia nodded. “He built a case with your signature all over it.”
“My signature?”
“Scanned copies. Old authorizations. Shell companies. Enough to make you look like you ran everything Rocco was doing.”
Blue lights flooded the wet kitchen windows.
A loudspeaker outside ordered everyone to exit with hands visible.
Vincent looked at Sofia. “If I go out there, Bellamy gets time to run.”
“If you don’t, they call it resistance and your son watches you get shot.”
That ended the argument.
Vincent knelt in front of Nico.
“You stay with your mom.”
Nico grabbed his collar. “You’re leaving?”
“Just walking outside.”
“People who say ‘just’ are usually lying,” Sofia said.
Vincent looked at her.
She almost smiled.
Grace suddenly reached into her apron pocket.
“I have something.”
She pulled out a small brass key.
“The storage key Sofia gave me.”
Sofia’s face changed. “You still have it?”
“You told me to keep it until Bellamy moved the trust.”
Vincent looked at the address on Sofia’s letter.
“Unit 314.”
Sofia nodded. “The physical ledger is there.”
Isabella said, “Then that clears him.”
“Maybe,” Sofia said. “If it still exists.”
Outside, the loudspeaker repeated the command.
Dominic took the key. “I’ll get it.”
Vincent shook his head. “You’re on the board Bellamy tried to create. You walk into a federal perimeter, they’ll take you too.”
Emily raised her hand.
“No,” Grace said immediately.
“I didn’t even say anything.”
“I know you.”
Tony spoke. “My wife is outside the security perimeter with the staff evacuation buses. She’s not connected to the business. I can get the key to her.”
Vincent nodded. “Do it.”
He looked at Isabella. “You stay with Sofia.”
Isabella swallowed. “After everything, you trust me?”
“No. I trust Sofia to shoot you if she has to.”
Sofia said, “Fair.”
They walked toward the front entrance with their hands visible.
The doors opened.
Rain flashed silver under police lights.
Dozens of agents aimed weapons at Vincent.
A federal prosecutor stepped forward.
“Vincent Moretti, you are under arrest.”
Before the cuffs closed, an agent ran up to the prosecutor holding a phone.
“Sir, you need to see this.”
On the screen was live video from the river dock.
May you like
Charles Bellamy was boarding Vincent’s private boat.
And he had Emily with him.
