Chapter 18 - One Last Deal

Dominic answered on speaker.
Rocco’s voice came through calm and tired.
“Tell Vincent I have the ledger.”
Vincent stepped closer. “I’m here.”
“Good. Then you know this ends one of two ways.”
“Where are you?”
“The place your father taught you to shoot.”
Vincent knew immediately.
The abandoned quarry north of the city.
Rocco continued. “Bring Sofia. No police. No tricks.”
Vincent looked at Hale.
Hale shook his head.
Rocco laughed softly. “Federal man says no, doesn’t he? They always do until someone they love is on the other end.”
Vincent’s stomach tightened.
“Who do you have?”
A woman cried out in the background.
Grace covered her mouth.
Tony’s wife, Linda, had carried the storage key.
Rocco had intercepted her.
“Midnight,” Rocco said. “The ledger for Sofia. I keep one, you keep one. Like the old days.”
Sofia’s voice turned cold. “There were never old days between us.”
“There you are,” Rocco said. “The woman who almost ruined everything.”
The call ended.
Hale said, “We’re not trading a witness.”
Sofia answered, “Yes, we are.”
Vincent looked at her. “No.”
She smiled sadly. “Now you know how it feels.”
They built a plan anyway.
At 11:52 p.m., Vincent drove alone into the quarry in an old pickup with Sofia hidden beneath a tarp in the bed. Federal teams positioned beyond the ridge. Dominic stayed with Nico and Grace. Isabella, after telling agents how she had infiltrated Bellamy’s side for six months, was under guard.
The quarry lights came on one by one.
Rocco stood near the edge of the flooded pit with Linda bound to a chair.
The black ledger lay on the hood of his car.
Vincent stepped out.
“Let her go.”
“Show me Sofia.”
Sofia climbed from the truck bed.
Rocco smiled.
“There’s the ghost.”
Vincent walked forward with empty hands.
Rocco lifted the ledger.
“You know what’s in here, nephew? Judges. cops. businessmen. Your father. Me. And enough of your old signatures to bury you even if half the book is true.”
Vincent stopped ten feet away.
“What do you want?”
Rocco’s smile faded.
“To hear you say I was right.”
“About what?”
“That family survives through fear, not love.”
Vincent looked at Linda, trembling in the chair. At Sofia. At the dark ridge where men he did not control were waiting.
Then he said, “You’re right.”
Rocco’s face brightened.
Vincent added, “Fear is why nobody came with you.”
Behind Rocco, a car door opened.

Michael Moretti stepped out.
