Chapter 11 - The Medicine
The pills tested positive for a much stronger sedative than Mark had been prescribed.
Not enough to poison him.
Enough to make him confused, exhausted, and unsteady.
Enough to make good videos.
"She was manufacturing incompetence," Daniel said.
Mark sat in the hospital consultation room staring at the toxicology report.
"I thought I was falling apart."
Elena remembered mornings when he had apologized for forgetting meetings. Nights when Victoria had rolled her eyes and told staff, "He's not himself lately."
It had all been useful to her.
Ruiz added medication tampering to the case.
The family-court hearing became more dangerous, not less. Victoria's lawyers claimed the pills had been planted after she left the home.
They demanded Elena's employment history.
By noon, old accusations appeared online under Elena's name: theft from a previous employer, assault, prescription fraud.
None were true.
But the stories spread.
A reporter waited outside Mateo's shop.
Elena stared at the headlines on her phone.
"She is destroying me."
Mark took the phone from her.
"No. She's trying to make you leave."
"My brother is getting calls. My landlord asked if police are investigating me."
"I'll fix it."
Elena looked at him sharply.
"You can't fix everything with money."
The words landed harder than she intended.
Mark nodded once.
"You're right."
That surprised her.
He handed the phone back.
"But I can stand beside the truth. I should have done it sooner."
At the hearing, Victoria appeared by video, claiming she was in an undisclosed safe location because Mark had threatened her.
The judge asked where Clara was.
Mark answered.
Then Victoria's lawyer introduced a signed guardianship document naming Victoria as Clara's emergency guardian if Mark was incapacitated.
Daniel whispered, "I've never seen that."
Mark examined the signature.
It looked real.
The witness signature belonged to Peter Lang.
Peter, still in the hospital under police guard, denied ever signing it.
The judge ordered a forensic review.
Then Victoria leaned toward her camera.
"Your Honor, there is one more thing the court should know."

"Elena Reyes is not only an employee in that house. She has been receiving money from Clara Mercer's trust."
