Chapter 9 - The Family Clause

Margaret arrived in Chicago that evening on a private flight.

Mark met her in the library.

Elena stayed with Clara upstairs, but the old house carried voices through vents and stairwells. She could hear enough.

"Your father wrote the original contingency," Margaret said.

"Daniel says it was added six months ago."

"The wording was restored six months ago. It existed in an earlier draft twenty-five years ago."

Mark stared at her.

"Why?"

Margaret poured herself water with a steady hand.

"Because your father never trusted independent trustees. He wanted the family foundation to regain voting control if an heir died young."

"And you gave Victoria the language?"

"She found it in old files. She asked me what it meant. I told her."

"Did you know she planned to use it?"

Margaret finally looked ashamed.

"I knew she wanted more influence. I did not know she wanted Clara dead."

Mark laughed once, without humor.

"You always say things like that. You knew the first half and somehow the second half is never your responsibility."

Margaret's face hardened.

"Do not lecture me about responsibility. I protected this company before you could spell its name."

"And now my daughter almost died protecting it."

Upstairs, Clara woke from her nap screaming.

Elena ran in.

The little girl pointed toward the closet.

"Lady there."

Elena's heart stopped.

The closet door was open.

No one was inside.

But the window beside it was unlocked.

A smear of mud marked the carpet.

Security searched the grounds.

Behind the hedge outside Clara's room, they found a black scarf and a disposable shoe cover.

Then Ruiz called.

Victoria had not been arrested.

Her lawyer's car had been found abandoned near O'Hare.

Her passport was still at home.

And twenty minutes earlier, someone using Victoria's credentials had accessed Clara's school emergency-contact portal.

Elena looked at Clara.

"She's not running away," she whispered.

Mark heard her.

"No."

His face went cold.

"She's coming back for Clara."
