Chapter 18 - The Man Behind the Numbers

Peter did not ask for a lawyer until after he started talking.

That was his final mistake.

He admitted he had spent years engineering a sale of Mercer Medical Holdings. The family trust structure was the obstacle. Olivia had discovered the plan and wanted Clara's shares moved beyond the board's reach.

Peter diverted her email.

He pressured Margaret to keep the old clause alive.

After Olivia died, he waited.

Then Victoria arrived.

"She wanted status," Peter said. "Then she wanted control. I gave her a path."

Mark stared at him.

"You recruited my wife to steal my daughter's company."

"I didn't tell her to hurt Clara."

"You stood behind a camera while she held Clara over a railing."

Peter's face collapsed.

"I know."

"No. You know now because you're caught."

Ruiz placed Peter under arrest for conspiracy, fraud, obstruction, and his role in the forged guardianship documents.

Lucas agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration on lesser charges. His testimony tied Victoria and Peter to the fake accounts, the brake-line attack, and Peter's staged kidnapping.

That last part stunned everyone.

Peter had arranged his own abduction after the shooting to create leverage and erase evidence.

"So the lake house was theater?" Elena asked.

Ruiz nodded. "Until Lucas realized Peter planned to blame him for everything. Then it became real."

The board called an emergency meeting.

Mark walked into the Mercer Medical headquarters with Daniel on one side and an independent forensic accountant on the other.

Margaret sat at the far end of the table.

For once, she did not occupy the head chair.

Mark did.

He canceled the sale process.

He removed Peter as CFO.

He suspended every board member who had voted using information from the compromised trust amendment.

Then he announced that Clara's shares would be moved to an independent fiduciary structure Olivia had originally requested.

One director objected.

"You can't dismantle a century of family control because of one domestic scandal."

Mark looked at him.

"My daughter almost died because all of you kept calling crimes 'family business.'"

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel slid a final document across the table.

"There is one more signature we need to discuss."

It was Margaret Mercer's.

She had approved Peter's first unauthorized transfer eleven years earlier.
