Chapter 14 - The Second Test

Jonathan Vale was not Michael’s biological father.
That was the first thing the new test established.
The vial contained dried blood from a newborn screening card marked MICHAEL R. BENNETT, 1988.
Rachel stared at the lab report.
“How can Jonathan’s story be wrong?”
“Because Diane lied to him too,” Emma said.
Michael sat motionless.
A genealogical comparison produced a close match in a federal database through a distant relative.
The paternal line belonged to the Mercer family.
Michael knew the name.
Everyone in Chicago finance knew it.
Charles Mercer had been Richard Bennett’s closest friend and business partner until a bitter split in 1989.
He died in 2004.
Michael whispered, “My mother had an affair with Richard’s best friend.”
Rachel shook her head. “Maybe.”
Emma noticed the hesitation. “What aren’t you saying?”
Rachel opened an archived letter from Richard’s files.
Charles,
I know what happened. Diane told me enough. Michael is innocent. Whatever exists between us ends here, but I will not let you claim him for leverage.
Michael read the line twice.
“For leverage?”
Rachel placed another document beside it.
In 1989, Mercer Capital had attempted a hostile acquisition of Bennett Group.
Charles Mercer privately claimed he had ‘family standing’ to challenge the Bennett succession.
The bid collapsed after Richard threatened litigation.
Emma’s eyes narrowed. “Diane’s secret wasn’t just an affair.”
“No,” Rachel said. “It was corporate ammunition.”
Michael suddenly understood.
Diane had spent decades using paternity as a weapon because paternity had once nearly destroyed the company.
He looked at Lily sleeping nearby.
“And she tried to do the same thing to my child.”
Morales entered with a phone in her hand.
“We found Diane.”
“Where?”
“She checked into a private airfield under another name.”
Michael stood.
“She’s leaving the country?”
“She was.”
“Was?”
Morales’s expression tightened.
“The plane never took off.”
“Why?”
“Because Diane wasn’t trying to escape alone.”
Emma’s face drained.
Morales turned the phone toward them.
A security image showed Diane entering the hangar.
Beside her was a woman carrying a child in a hooded blanket.
May you like
Lily’s nanny.
And the child was Lily.
