Chapter 9 - Not His Son

Michael left the room.

Emma found him in the hallway, staring through a window at downtown Chicago.

“Michael.”

“Don’t.”

She stopped beside him.

For thirty-eight years, Michael Bennett had believed Richard was his father.

The man who taught him to ride a bike.

The man who attended every baseball game he could.

The man whose trust was now tearing the family apart.

“This doesn’t change who raised you,” Emma said.

Michael laughed bitterly. “My mother spent my entire life talking about Bennett blood.”

Emma understood before he said it.

“She knew.”

“She knew I wasn’t Richard’s biological son.”

“And she still used blood against Lily.”

Michael turned toward her. “Because she knew exactly how powerful that lie could be.”

Rachel joined them carrying another folder.

“There’s more.”

Michael closed his eyes. “Of course there is.”

Richard’s trust language did not say ‘biological descendant of Richard Bennett.’

It said ‘Michael Bennett’s first biological child.’

The distinction was deliberate.

“Your father knew,” Rachel said.

“Richard knew I wasn’t his?”

“I believe so.”

“Then why write the trust this way?”

“Because he considered you his son.”

Michael looked away.

Rachel handed him a sealed letter.

It was addressed in Richard’s handwriting.

Michael opened it.

Son,

Blood is useful to doctors and dangerous to families. If you ever learn the truth of your birth, know this first: I chose you every day of my life. Diane’s mistake was believing biology determines loyalty. It does not.

Michael’s eyes filled.

Emma squeezed his hand.

The letter continued.

Your biological father is not the threat. Diane is. She has used this secret to protect herself for decades.

Michael turned the page.

There was a name.

Jonathan Vale.

Emma frowned. “Who is that?”

Rachel’s face changed.

“Jonathan Vale was Diane’s financial adviser.”

“Was?”

“He disappeared in 1991.”

Michael looked up.

Rachel took a breath.

“And his disappearance was never solved.”
