Chapter 3 - The Missing Eleven Minutes

By midnight, Diane had been booked on charges related to reckless endangerment and assault while prosecutors reviewed whether they could support attempted murder.

By one in the morning, Bennett attorneys were already outside the station.

By two, a local news site had published a story claiming the incident was “a tragic domestic misunderstanding.”

Michael read the headline on his phone and laughed once without humor.

“That came from my mother.”

Detective Morales shook her head. “Not from jail. The article quotes an unnamed family representative.”

Emma sat beside Lily’s hospital crib. “Who has access to the house security?”

“Your private security company. Your household manager. Your mother. Mr. Bennett.”

Michael looked up. “And my cousin Caleb.”

Morales wrote the name down.

Caleb Bennett was chief operating officer of Bennett Group and the one relative Michael had trusted since childhood.

“He helped install the system,” Michael said. “He knows every vendor.”

Emma watched his face. “You don’t think he did it.”

“No.”

“You hesitated.”

Michael’s jaw tightened.

The next morning, Rachel Sloan arrived at the hospital carrying a battered leather briefcase.

She was seventy-two, silver-haired, and furious before she even sat down.

“I should have delivered those documents myself years ago.”

“Why didn’t you?” Michael asked.

“Because your mother filed an objection claiming the amendment had been revoked.”

Michael stared at her. “Was it?”

“No.”

Rachel opened her briefcase and removed a photocopy.

The document claimed Richard had canceled the descendant trust seven days before his death.

Michael studied the signature.

It looked perfect.

Too perfect.

“My father signed like this.”

Rachel nodded. “Someone practiced.”

Emma felt cold. “You think it was forged?”

“I know it was.”

“How?”

“Because the revocation was notarized in Chicago at 3:15 p.m. on March eighth.”

Rachel looked directly at Michael.

“Your father was in intensive care in Boston that entire day.”

Michael leaned back.

Rachel continued. “I challenged it. Diane threatened litigation. Then my husband got sick. I retired. The firm told me the dispute had been resolved internally.”

“By who?”

“Bennett Group general counsel.”

Michael already knew the name.

“Caleb’s brother-in-law.”

Rachel nodded.

A nurse entered. “Mr. Bennett, there’s a call for you at the desk. Someone says it’s urgent and won’t give a name.”

Michael took it in the hall.

A man whispered, “If you want the original security footage, come alone.”

“Who is this?”

“Someone your mother fired last year.”

“Where?”

May you like

The man gave an address.

Then added, “And don’t tell Caleb Bennett. He’s the one who ordered the footage erased.”
