Chapter 11 - The Trial

The courtroom was smaller than the Whitmore dining room.
Good.
Evelyn had less space to perform.
The prosecution began with documents.
Smart.
Not me.
Not Serena.
Documents.
The original trust.
The fake amendment.
The forged date.
The bank transfers.
The Dr. Crane payments.
Then Charles testified.
He admitted drafting the fake amendment.
Evelyn stared at him like betrayal was a crime only when directed at her.
Then Serena.
She cried before sitting down.
The prosecutor asked:
“Did you push Emma Whitmore?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To create an incident.”
“What incident?”
“One that made her look unstable.”
“Did you intend her to fall down the stairs?”
“No.”
“Did you know she could?”
Serena closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
Then the chandelier footage played.
No one needed commentary.
Two hands.
My body falling.
Serena grabbing Rosa.
Fake tears.
Daniel looking at Evelyn before moving.
I hated that part every time.
Then Rosa testified.
Evelyn’s attorney attacked her.
Called her disloyal.
Asked why she secretly installed a camera.
Rosa answered:
“Because rich people kept telling me I saw things wrong.”
The jury listened.
Then Daniel testified.
Hardest of all.
He admitted ignoring my warnings.
Following fake psychiatric messages.
Letting his mother influence his decisions.
Then the prosecutor asked:
“Did Emma ever attack Serena before the fall?”
“No.”
“Did Emma behave violently?”
“No.”
“Did you believe your wife?”
Daniel looked at me.
“Not soon enough.”
That answer mattered.
Then I testified.
Evelyn’s attorney tried to frame me as ambitious.
He asked whether I knew the baby would receive valuable shares.
“Yes.”
“Did that excite you?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
I looked at the jury.
“Because my child is not a transaction.”
Silence.
Then he asked why I contacted Detective Chen before the fall.
“Because someone forged my name.”
“Did you suspect Evelyn?”
“Yes.”
“So you were already hostile toward the family.”
“No.”
I looked at him.
“I was already paying attention.”
Different.
Then Evelyn took the stand.
Against advice.
Of course.
She called the trust changes protective.
Called Serena emotional.
Called Charles confused.
Called Daniel weak.
Called me manipulative.
The prosecutor asked one question.
“Mrs. Whitmore, whose interests were you protecting?”
Evelyn answered:
“The family’s.”
“Which family member agreed with you?”
Silence.
Not Daniel.
Not me.
Not the unborn baby.
Not her late husband.
Only Evelyn.
The prosecutor sat down.
May you like
The trial was not over.
But the illusion was.
