Chapter 6 - Serena Starts Talking

Serena looked terrible.

No green dress.

No makeup.

No mansion audience.

She sat in a hospital conference room with her attorney.

Laura recorded everything.

Serena began with one sentence.

“My mother planned the trust scheme.”

Of course.

Laura did not react.

“And you?”

“I helped.”

“What did you do?”

Serena looked at the table.

“Forged Emma’s consent page.”

My hands tightened.

“Paid Dr. Crane.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Sent messages pretending to be his office.”

Then:

“Set up the incident.”

Laura leaned forward.

“What does that mean?”

“I needed Emma to look unstable in front of Daniel.”

“So you shoved her down the stairs?”

Serena started crying.

“I meant to push her back.”

My blood went cold.

“You were standing beside marble stairs.”

“I know.”

“Did you intend her to fall?”

“No.”

“Did you know she could?”

Serena said nothing.

That silence was enough for me.

Then Laura asked:

“Why confess now?”

Serena looked toward the hallway.

“Because Mom is going to blame me for everything.”

Not remorse.

Self-preservation.

Fine.

Truth does not need pure motives to be useful.

Serena produced emails.

Voice notes.

Bank transfers.

One recording from Evelyn’s study.

Evelyn’s voice:

Daniel will never choose Emma over the family if he believes the baby is at risk.

Serena:

What if he does?

Evelyn:

Then he loses his board seat too.

Daniel looked up.

“What?”

Serena explained.

Evelyn controlled two older board members.

If Daniel resisted, they planned to accuse him of poor judgment and temporarily suspend his executive authority.

The family conspiracy reached into Whitmore Hospitality.

Emma first.

Daniel second.

Baby third.

Control everything.

Then Serena said something unexpected.

“There’s another person.”

“Who?” Laura asked.

“Charles Bennett.”

I frowned.

Daniel went still.

Charles was Whitmore Hospitality’s general counsel.

He had been Daniel’s mentor for fifteen years.

Serena continued.

“He drafted the fake trust amendment.”

Daniel whispered:

“No.”

Serena looked at him.

“He did.”

Why?

Because Evelyn promised him the CEO succession committee after Daniel’s father retired.

Power again.

Then Serena handed Laura a flash drive.

“Everything is here.”

Laura took it.

Then Serena added:

“Except the original trust.”

“Where is it?”

“My mother moved it.”

“Where?”

Serena looked at Daniel.

“Your father’s grave.”

Silence.

Daniel stared.

“What?”

May you like

“She put it inside the mausoleum.”

That was when this stopped feeling like financial fraud and started feeling like a family mythology built by insane people with attorneys.
