Chapter 5 - Evelyn’s Visit

Evelyn Whitmore did not look like a woman caught in a criminal investigation.

She arrived in cream wool.

Pearls.

Perfect hair.

The same expression she wore at charity luncheons when someone else’s crisis threatened dessert.

Hospital security stopped her before she reached my room.

She demanded to see Daniel.

He went into the hallway.

I watched through the glass.

She touched his face.

He pulled away.

That was new.

Then she said something.

He went completely still.

When he returned, his face looked gray.

“What?”

He closed the door.

“My mother says the trust doesn’t belong to our baby.”

I stared.

“What does that mean?”

“She says the trust was amended.”

“By who?”

“My grandfather.”

Daniel’s grandfather had died four years earlier.

If he amended the trust, why had no one told us?

Laura requested the original files from Whitmore Family Counsel.

The firm hesitated.

Then produced two versions.

Version one:

Our child receives seven percent.

Version two:

The shares remain under “family stewardship” until age thirty.

Steward named:

Evelyn Whitmore.

Signature:

Grandfather Whitmore.

Date:

Three months after his death.

Forgery.

Not a clever one once anyone bothered to compare dates.

Daniel stared at the paper.

“My mother filed this?”

Laura answered:

“Her attorney did.”

“Did she know?”

“We have emails.”

She knew.

Serena knew.

The goal was bigger than temporary guardianship.

They wanted to keep the baby’s shares under Evelyn’s control for decades.

Why?

Because Whitmore Hospitality was divided between three branches of the family.

Our baby’s seven percent would shift control away from Evelyn’s branch.

Unless she controlled the vote.

Money had become motive.

But not the whole motive.

Laura showed us another email.

Evelyn to Serena:

Daniel married below himself once. We will not let Emma rewrite the family structure through a child.

I read it twice.

Below himself.

That was how she saw me.

Not daughter-in-law.

Not mother of her grandchild.

A structural threat.

Daniel’s face changed.

For years, he defended Evelyn by saying she had high standards.

Now those standards were in writing.

Then came another message.

Serena to Evelyn:

If Emma falls apart before delivery, we can still control the timeline.

Evelyn replied:

Then make sure Daniel sees it happen.

Daniel put the phone down.

He could not speak.

I could.

“They didn’t just want me gone.”

Laura nodded.

“They wanted you discredited.”

Then Daniel whispered:

“And they used me as the witness.”

Exactly.

Then a nurse entered.

“Mrs. Whitmore?”

“Yes?”

“There’s a woman downstairs asking for Detective Chen.”

Laura frowned.

“Who?”

The nurse checked the note.

“Serena Whitmore.”

We all stared.

Serena had left police custody after initial questioning.

Now she had come to the hospital voluntarily.

And she was asking for a deal.
