Chapter 19 - The Trial of Reality

Their daughter spent three weeks in neonatal care.

They named her Celeste Mara Blackwood.

Marcus worried the name carried too much grief. Elena said grief became inheritance only when nobody changed the ending.

Victoria was charged with poisoning, unlawful human experimentation, assault, evidence tampering, kidnapping, and conspiracy. Owen survived the gunshot; the bullet had passed through his shoulder. His daughter was found locked in a rented apartment under guard by one of Victoria's contractors.

The case should have been simple after that.

It wasn't.

Victoria's attorneys attacked Elena's memory, her hallucinations, her family history, every contradictory statement she made during the first forty-eight hours.

"Mrs. Blackwood," one lawyer asked during a pretrial hearing, "did you or did you not falsely report that my client physically attacked you in the dining room?"

Elena looked directly at Victoria.

"I reported what I experienced while under a drug your client secretly gave me."

"So the attack did not happen."

"That attack didn't. The poisoning did."

"And you expect this court to know when your perception is reliable?"

Elena's hands trembled below the table.

She remembered Marcus's rule.

Evidence first.

"No," she said. "I expect the court to look at lab results, purchase records, security footage, forged medical documents, audio files, witness testimony, and the syringe found in my hospital room. You don't have to trust my mind. Trust what she left behind."

For the first time, Victoria looked afraid.

The prosecution later uncovered payments to Aurelia researchers, encrypted messages ordering Owen to place props around the estate, and voice-model files used to fabricate Elena's threats.

But one question remained.

Who had worn the red dress when Elena saw a woman outside the greenhouse?

Owen swore it wasn't Victoria. Victoria's location data placed her inside the estate at that exact moment, in a room with no quick path to the greenhouse.

The contractor who escaped the hospital denied wearing it.

Elena tried not to care.

Then one evening, while feeding Celeste at the lake house, she received an unmarked envelope.

Inside was a photograph taken through the nursery window.

Elena holding her baby.
