Chapter 4 - Playback

Marcus kicked the door twice before the old frame split.
The west wing smelled like dust, damp wood, and something chemical.
"Mom!" he shouted.
No answer.
The baby monitor kept hissing from somewhere ahead. Elena followed the sound into a sitting room covered in white sheets. On a side table, a black speaker blinked blue.
Marcus snatched it up.
The voice played again.
"Elena, sweetheart. You should have listened to me."
Then silence.
Marcus turned the speaker over. "It's a recorder."
"Someone triggered it."
Owen stood in the doorway. "Could be on a timer."
"Could be you," Elena said.
His mouth tightened.
They searched the room. Behind a cabinet, Marcus found a narrow door disguised by wallpaper. It opened onto a service corridor running between the walls.
Elena's skin prickled.
"This is how she moves around without being seen."
"These passages are a hundred years old," Marcus said. "Servants used them."
"And your mother knows every inch of this place."
They entered single file. Dust covered the floor except for one clean line where something had been dragged recently.
At the end stood a metal medical cabinet.
Inside were boxes labeled AURELIA MATERNAL SUPPORT - CLINICAL SAMPLE - NOT FOR RETAIL.
Marcus picked up one packet. "Aurelia?"
"That's the name on my vitamins."
His expression went blank.
Elena ripped open a packet. The pills were the same soft pink tablets Victoria had given her.
Owen swore under his breath.
"What?" Elena snapped.
"Nothing."
"You keep saying that."
Marcus searched the cabinet and found a small notebook. Most pages had been torn out. One remained.
E.B. - 18 weeks - vivid dreams.
E.B. - 20 weeks - auditory distortion.
E.B. - 22 weeks - paranoia increasing.
Elena's initials.
Her pregnancy timeline.
Marcus's hands began to shake.
"Tell me you didn't know," she said.
"I didn't."
"Look at me and say it."
He did. "I didn't know."
Behind them, Owen bolted.
Marcus chased him.
Elena bent to grab the notebook, and a shadow moved in the wall mirror.
A woman stood directly behind her.
May you like
Crimson velvet. Pale face. Smiling.
Victoria whispered, "Now he'll finally believe you're dangerous.
