Chapter 9 - Smoke and Memory

Marcus smashed a side panel with a shovel.

Cold rain punched through the broken glass as all three crawled outside coughing. Elena fell to her knees in the mud, one arm wrapped over her belly.

"Baby?" Marcus asked.

"Moving. I'm okay. Go help Owen."

Sirens sounded beyond the trees.

When police arrived, the red-dressed woman was gone.

Again.

The greenhouse key was found in Elena's robe pocket.

She stared at it in the deputy's gloved hand.

"No."

The deputy's expression closed.

"I didn't put that there."

Victoria arrived ten minutes later with an attorney.

"Elena," she said softly, "you need medical help."

"I need you in handcuffs."

"You see me everywhere. You accuse people. You carry weapons. Now a key is found on you after three people almost die."

Marcus stepped forward. "Back off."

Victoria looked at her son. "You are feeding her delusion."

"And you're feeding her something else."

For the first time, Victoria lost control of her face.

Only for a heartbeat.

But Elena saw it.

So did Marcus.

At the hospital, doctors monitored Elena for hours. Dr. Chen, bruised but furious, ordered a toxicology panel no Blackwood lawyer could stop.

Owen survived. He refused to speak to police until his own lawyer arrived.

Near midnight, Mara entered Elena's room holding printed results.

"We found a synthetic compound in your blood," she said. "It's not approved for prenatal use. It's structurally similar to an old sedative-adjacent research drug, but modified."

Marcus stood up. "Can it cause hallucinations?"

"Very likely. Memory distortion too. Emotional amplification."

Elena shut her eyes.

Relief came first, then humiliation, then rage.

"So I'm not imagining that I'm imagining things."

Mara's expression softened. "Something real is happening to your brain. That doesn't mean every frightening thing you saw was real."

A nurse knocked and handed Mara a sealed envelope delivered by courier.

Inside was a laboratory report dated five months earlier.

ELENA BLACKWOOD - BASELINE BLOOD PANEL.

Attached was a consent form authorizing experimental exposure.

The signature at the bottom was Elena's.

This time, Elena recognized it.

Because she remembered signing the page.
