CHAPTER 11 — The Secret Sarah Took To Her Grave

"The child is still alive."

Those five words destroyed everything I thought I knew.

I stared at the photograph in Claire's hand.

Sarah.

My Sarah.

Standing outside a hospital.

Holding a baby.

A baby I had never seen before.

A baby who was not Maya.

My fingers started shaking.

"Where did you get that?"

Claire looked at me.

"From Sarah."

The room became silent.

"No."

My voice was barely a whisper.

"That's impossible."

Claire lowered her eyes.

"I know what it looks like."

I stepped closer.

"But Sarah died fifteen years ago."

"Yes."

"Then how did she give you this?"

Claire took a deep breath.

"Because she gave it to me three days before the accident."

The word accident felt different now.

Not like a tragedy.

Like a question.

I looked at Eleanor.

She was staring at the photograph.

Not with anger.

Not with jealousy.

With shock.

"You knew?"

I asked Claire.

"You knew Sarah was investigating something?"

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

Her face filled with regret.

"Because Sarah asked me not to."

I froze.

"Why?"

Claire looked at Maya.

Then back at me.

"Because she believed someone close to you was watching."

My heart tightened.

"Watching who?"

"You."

The room went cold.

Claire opened the folder.

"Sarah discovered financial records connected to Whitmore Holdings."

She placed papers on the table.

"She found evidence that someone had been moving money through different companies."

I looked at the documents.

"David?"

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

My jaw tightened.

"But why didn't she tell me?"

"Because she was afraid."

I almost laughed.

"Sarah was never afraid."

Claire looked at me sadly.

"She wasn't afraid for herself."

A pause.

"She was afraid for you."

Those words hurt.

Because they sounded exactly like Sarah.

She always protected everyone.

Even when she was the one suffering.

Claire continued.

"Sarah discovered David wasn't working alone."

My eyes narrowed.

"Who else?"

Claire hesitated.

That hesitation made my stomach drop.

"Who else?"

She looked at Eleanor.

And Eleanor immediately stepped back.

"No."

Claire said nothing.

But her silence was enough.

I turned toward Eleanor.

"What?"

She looked confused.

"I don't understand."

Claire spoke softly.

"Your father was not the mastermind."

Eleanor's face changed.

"We already know that."

"No."

Claire shook her head.

"You don't."

She opened another file.

"Victor Whitmore wasn't destroyed by Richard."

Eleanor stared at the papers.

"Then who?"

Claire looked directly at her.

"Your own uncle."

Silence.

"My uncle?"

Claire nodded.

"Your uncle Marcus controlled the company finances."

Eleanor's face went pale.

"But he died."

"Yes."

"When?"

"Two years after your father lost everything."

Nobody spoke.

Claire continued.

"He disappeared after taking millions."

My mind raced.

"So Thomas blamed me..."

"Because Marcus convinced everyone that Sterling Industries was responsible."

Claire looked at Eleanor.

"And Thomas believed him."

I looked at Thomas.

He stood frozen.

For the first time...

he looked old.

Broken.

Like a man who had spent fifteen years chasing the wrong enemy.

But one question remained.

"What does Sarah have to do with the baby?"

Claire became quiet.

Too quiet.

I felt my heart speed up.

"Claire."

She looked at me.

"Sarah discovered Marcus wasn't just stealing money."

A pause.

"He was involved in something much worse."

"What?"

Claire looked at Maya.

"He was using families."

Nobody moved.

"Children."

My blood ran cold.

"Explain."

Claire opened the final document.

A hospital record.

A birth certificate.

My eyes moved across the page.

And stopped.

Because I recognized the name.

"Emily?"

Claire nodded.

"Sarah found a child who was being hidden."

My breathing stopped.

"The baby in the photo?"

"Yes."

I looked at the picture again.

Sarah holding the child.

Protecting her.

"Who is she?"

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"Her name is Emily."

I shook my head.

"I don't understand."

Claire looked at me.

"Sarah discovered that Marcus had been involved in illegal adoption schemes."

The room went silent.

"He was taking children from vulnerable families."

Maya covered her mouth.

Eleanor looked horrified.

"And Sarah found one of them."

Claire nodded.

"She rescued her."

My voice became quiet.

"Then why didn't she tell me?"

Claire looked down.

"Because Sarah believed the people responsible were closer than anyone knew."

I looked at Thomas.

Then Eleanor.

Then the empty space where my past had been.

"Who knew?"

Claire answered:

"Only three people."

"Who?"

"Sarah."

A pause.

"Me."

Another pause.

"And David Collins."

My blood froze.

"David knew?"

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

"Then why did he let her die?"

Claire looked at me.

"He didn't."

Nobody moved.

I stared.

"What?"

Claire swallowed.

"David tried to protect Sarah."

My mind couldn't process it.

"Then who caused the accident?"

Claire looked at the floor.

And whispered:

"The person who wanted Sarah silent."

My voice became colder.

"Who?"

Claire slowly raised her eyes.

And said:

"The person who was with Sarah the night before she died."

My heart stopped.

"Who was that?"

Claire didn't answer immediately.

Then she said:

"Your wife."

Everyone turned.

Eleanor stepped back.

"What?"

Claire looked at her.

"Sarah called you."

The room became completely silent.

I looked at Eleanor.

"You met Sarah?"

Eleanor's face went pale.

"No..."

But her voice was weak.

Not angry.

Afraid.

Claire continued:

"Sarah knew she was sick."

My eyes narrowed.

"What?"

"She knew she didn't have much time."

The room froze.

"She contacted Eleanor because she believed Eleanor could protect Maya."

I stared at Eleanor.

"Protect her?"

Claire nodded.

"Sarah didn't hate Eleanor."

A tear rolled down Eleanor's face.

"Sarah trusted her."

Nobody spoke.

Then Eleanor whispered:

"She knew?"

Claire nodded.

"She knew you were going to enter Richard's life."

I felt completely lost.

"Then why..."

I looked at Eleanor.

"Why did you hurt Maya?"

Eleanor broke down.

For the first time...

there was no anger.

No defense.

Only guilt.

"I was angry."

Her voice shook.

"I was angry at you."

She looked at Maya.

"And I took it out on the wrong person."

Maya stared at her.

Silent.

Then Claire placed one more document on the table.

"The reason Sarah contacted Eleanor..."

She pushed it toward me.

"Was because she knew someone would come after Maya."

I opened the document.

The last sentence made my blood run cold.

"If anything happens to me, protect my daughter and find the child I saved."

I looked at Claire.

"What child?"

Claire whispered:

"The child in the photograph."

A pause.

"Emily."

Then she looked at Maya.

And said something that made everyone freeze.

"Because Emily and Maya..."

"are connected by the same secret."

My heart stopped.

"What secret?"

Claire looked toward the stairs.

Toward the place where Maya's secret box had been.

And whispered:

May you like

"The secret Sarah hid from everyone..."

"including you."
