CHAPTER 6 — The Lie Hidden Inside My Own Signature

For a few seconds...
Nobody in the room breathed.
The envelope sat on the dining table.
Small.
Simple.
But it felt heavier than anything I had ever held.
Because inside was supposed to be proof that I was the monster.
Eleanor leaned against the table, watching me.
Waiting.
She looked confident again.
Almost relieved.
"Go ahead, Richard."
Her voice was calm.
"Open it."
I stared at her.
"You seem very sure of yourself."
A faint smile appeared on her lips.
"Because I know the truth."
I almost laughed.
"The truth?"
She nodded.
"That you were never prepared to raise Maya alone."
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a document.
A letter.
My name at the bottom.
My signature.
My handwriting.
Everything looked real.
Too real.
The letter said:
"I, Richard Sterling, acknowledge that my business responsibilities prevent me from providing full-time care for Maya. I believe Eleanor Sterling is better equipped to handle her emotional and daily needs."
My hands shook.
I looked at the signature.
It looked like mine.
But I knew one thing.
I had never written those words.
Never.
My attorney spoke through the phone.
"Richard, don't touch anything else."
I looked at him.
"What?"
"Take pictures. Preserve everything."
Eleanor rolled her eyes.
"Oh, please. Are we really pretending this is fake?"
I looked at her.
"You created this."
Her expression hardened.
"Be careful."
"No."
I placed the letter down.
"I'm done being careful."
My voice became colder.
"You spent months making my daughter afraid of you. You manipulated school records. You prepared legal documents behind my back."
I stepped closer.
"And now you forged my signature."
The room became silent.
Then Eleanor laughed.
A quiet, almost disappointed laugh.
"You really think anyone will believe you?"
She pointed toward the letter.
"The court sees a document."
She pointed toward herself.
"They see a wife who has been taking care of your daughter."
Then she pointed at me.
"And they see a wealthy businessman who was barely home."
Her words hurt because she had built her entire plan around my biggest regret.
Being absent.
But she forgot something.
I wasn't the same man who walked into this house tonight.
The man who came home was broken.
The man standing here now was awake.
Then Maya spoke.
"Daddy..."
I turned.
She was staring at the letter.
Her face had gone pale.
"What is it?"
She slowly walked closer.
"That paper..."
My heart tightened.
"What about it?"
She looked at Eleanor.
"I've seen it before."
Everyone froze.
Eleanor immediately stepped forward.
"Maya, stop."
"No."
My daughter shook her head.
For the first time that night...
she didn't sound afraid.
"I saw her make it."
The room exploded into silence.
I looked at Maya.
"What?"
She swallowed.
"Two weeks ago."
Eleanor's face changed.
"Maya, you're confused."
My daughter shook her head.
"No."
Her voice trembled.
"But I remember."
I knelt beside her.
"Tell me."
Maya looked at me.
"I woke up because I heard the printer."
My stomach tightened.
"Where?"
"In her office."
She looked toward Eleanor.
"She was sitting there with papers."
"What happened next?"
Maya's fingers tightened around her sleeve.
"She told someone on the phone..."
She stopped.
"Say it."
Maya closed her eyes.
"She said, 'Once Richard signs this, everything will be easier.'"
My blood ran cold.
"Who was she talking to?"
Maya shook her head.
"I don't know."
Eleanor suddenly moved.
Fast.
Too fast.
She reached for Maya's arm.
"Maya, you need to stop lying."
I stepped between them instantly.
"Don't touch her."
The room froze.
Eleanor stared at me.
"You would threaten your own wife?"
I looked at her.
"No."
I lowered my voice.
"I would protect my daughter."
Then something unexpected happened.
A voice came from the doorway.
"I can tell you who she was talking to."
Everyone turned.
Standing there was someone nobody expected.
Daniel Brooks.
Eleanor's former business partner.
The man who designed half the renovations in our house.
The man who had helped Eleanor create the perfect image of herself.
Eleanor's face changed completely.
"Daniel?"
He walked into the room slowly.
"I was hoping I wouldn't have to do this."
My eyes narrowed.
"Do what?"
He looked at me.
"Tell you the truth about your wife."
Eleanor's voice became sharp.
"You don't know what you're talking about."
Daniel ignored her.
"I know exactly what I'm talking about."
He placed a folder on the table.
"I have emails."
Nobody moved.
"Messages."
Another folder.
"Financial records."
He looked at Eleanor.
"And recordings."
The color disappeared from her face.
"You said you deleted those."
Daniel smiled sadly.
"You always underestimated people."
My attorney immediately spoke.
"Richard, ask him what he has."
I looked at Daniel.
"What are these recordings?"
He opened the folder.
"The conversations between Eleanor and the lawyer she hired."
My chest tightened.
"What lawyer?"
"The one who prepared the custody documents."
Silence.
Then Daniel said the words that changed everything.
"She wasn't planning to take Maya away."
I looked confused.
"Then what was she planning?"
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
"She was planning to remove Richard completely."
The room went still.
Eleanor's face turned white.
My voice dropped.
"Explain."
Daniel took a deep breath.
"Richard..."
He looked at me.
"Your wife wasn't trying to become Maya's guardian."
He opened the folder.
"She was trying to have you declared mentally unstable after years of grief and stress."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
Daniel continued.
"She wanted control over your estate."
Nobody spoke.
"Your companies."
A pause.
"Your assets."
I stared at Eleanor.
The woman I married.
The woman who promised to love my daughter.
The woman who said she was building a family.
Wasn't building a family.
She was building a takeover.
Then Daniel placed one final piece of paper on the table.
A document with Eleanor's signature.
And a title that made my blood run cold.
"Marriage Protection Agreement."
But underneath...
was another sentence.
"Transfer of Assets Upon Incapacity."
I looked at Eleanor.
And whispered:
"You were never trying to replace Sarah."
Her eyes flickered.
"No."
I stepped closer.
"You were trying to replace me."
For the first time...
Eleanor looked afraid.
But then her phone rang.
She glanced at the screen.
And suddenly smiled.
A terrifying smile.
Because whoever was calling...
gave her back her confidence.
She answered.
"Yes."
A pause.
Then she looked directly at me.
"He's here."
My blood ran cold.
"Who is that?"
Eleanor ended the call.
And said:
"The person who is going to destroy you."
The front door opened.
And a man walked inside.
A man I had not seen in fifteen years.
My former business partner.
The man who disappeared after stealing millions from me.
Eleanor smiled.
May you like
"Richard..."
"Meet the person who knows all your secrets."
