CHAPTER 13 — The Person Sarah Trusted Was The Person Who Destroyed Us

"The person who killed Sarah..."

Thomas's voice became almost a whisper.

"was someone she invited into her home."

Nobody moved.

The sentence hung there.

Impossible.

Painful.

Terrifying.

Because Sarah wasn't careless.

She didn't trust easily.

She spent years building walls around herself.

But when she loved someone...

she gave them everything.

Her heart.

Her loyalty.

Her trust.

I looked at Thomas.

"Who?"

He didn't answer.

His eyes moved toward Eleanor.

Then toward me.

Like he was afraid to say the name.

"Thomas."

My voice hardened.

"Who was it?"

He closed his eyes.

Then whispered:

"David Collins."

The room went silent.

Even the rain outside seemed to disappear.

David.

My best friend.

My business partner.

The man who stood beside me during the hardest years of my life.

The man who held my shoulder at Sarah's funeral and told me:

"We'll get through this together."

My stomach turned.

"No."

Thomas looked at me.

"I wish I was wrong."

I shook my head.

"You don't understand."

My voice cracked.

"David was like a brother."

Thomas nodded.

"That's why he was dangerous."

I couldn't speak.

Because suddenly every memory looked different.

Every conversation.

Every meeting.

Every moment.

The person who helped me survive...

may have been the person who caused my pain.

Then Maya spoke.

"Daddy..."

I turned.

She was looking at the old photograph.

Not the one of Sarah and Emily.

Another one.

One from the box.

Her small fingers pointed at the picture.

"I remember him."

My heart stopped.

"Who?"

Maya looked at me.

"The man Mommy was scared of."

Nobody moved.

I knelt beside her.

"What man?"

She picked up the photograph.

It showed Sarah standing in our old kitchen.

Maya was a baby.

Sarah was smiling.

And behind them...

a man was standing near the doorway.

The picture was blurry.

But I knew that face.

David.

My hands started shaking.

"Maya..."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Mommy told me not to tell anyone."

I felt my chest tighten.

"Tell me now."

She looked scared.

Not of punishment.

Of remembering.

"The night before Mommy left..."

She stopped.

I waited.

"David came to our house."

Everyone froze.

"Why?"

Maya shook her head.

"I don't know."

She looked down.

"But Mommy was upset."

My breathing became shallow.

"What happened?"

Maya hugged herself.

"Mommy told him he couldn't take something."

Claire suddenly looked up.

"Take what?"

Maya shook her head.

"I don't know."

A pause.

"Then David got angry."

I felt my hands turning cold.

"How angry?"

Maya whispered:

"He yelled."

Silence.

"Mommy told him to leave."

"And then?"

Maya looked at me.

"I heard a crash."

My heart stopped.

"What crash?"

"From Mommy's office."

Nobody spoke.

"I wanted to go see."

Her voice became smaller.

"But Mommy came out."

I swallowed.

"Was she hurt?"

Maya nodded.

"A little."

My entire body went still.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Tears rolled down her face.

"Because Mommy told me to hide."

I closed my eyes.

Sarah.

Even dying...

she was protecting Maya.

"What did she say?"

Maya wiped her tears.

"She said..."

Her voice broke.

"She said, 'Daddy needs you to be brave.'"

I almost collapsed.

Because those were Sarah's words.

The words she would use.

Always.

Then Maya continued.

"She gave me the box."

My eyes widened.

"The secret box?"

She nodded.

"She told me if something happened..."

A pause.

"I should never give it to anyone except Daddy."

The room became silent.

Then Maya said the sentence that destroyed me.

"Mommy said David was going to hurt our family."

I looked at Thomas.

Then Eleanor.

Then Claire.

Everything connected.

David wasn't just stealing money.

He wasn't just hiding evidence.

He was destroying everyone who could expose him.

But one question remained.

"Why didn't David kill Sarah immediately?"

Thomas answered.

"Because Sarah had already protected herself."

"What do you mean?"

Thomas pointed at the box.

"She knew."

Claire nodded.

"Sarah had evidence."

"Enough to destroy him."

I looked at the documents.

"The recordings."

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

"Where are they?"

Nobody answered.

Then Thomas looked at Eleanor.

"Eleanor knows."

Everyone turned.

Eleanor froze.

"What?"

Thomas stepped closer.

"You found them."

Her face changed.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"You do."

"No."

Thomas's voice became darker.

"The night Sarah died, she sent you something."

Eleanor stepped back.

"I never received anything."

Thomas smiled.

"That's not what your old phone records say."

My eyes moved to Eleanor.

"What?"

She looked terrified.

Thomas continued.

"Sarah trusted you."

A pause.

"She sent you the evidence because she believed you were the only person who could understand losing a family."

Eleanor's face collapsed.

"No..."

I looked at her.

"You had the evidence?"

Tears filled her eyes.

"I didn't know what it was."

"Then what did you do?"

She looked down.

"I deleted the message."

Silence.

My heart broke.

"Why?"

Her voice shook.

"Because I hated you."

Nobody spoke.

"I saw Sarah's name."

She wiped her tears.

"I thought she was warning me about you."

I stared.

"And you ignored it."

She nodded.

"I was wrong."

For the first time...

Eleanor looked completely broken.

Not evil.

Not powerful.

Just a person who made a terrible choice.

Then my phone rang.

My security director.

I answered.

"Richard."

His voice was urgent.

"We found David."

My body went still.

"Where?"

"At the private airport."

My eyes narrowed.

"Why?"

A pause.

"Because he's leaving the country."

My blood ran cold.

"Stop him."

"We tried."

My heart sank.

"What happened?"

The answer came quietly.

"He's not alone."

"Who is with him?"

A pause.

Then:

"Your wife's former attorney."

I looked at Eleanor.

Her face went pale.

Because she knew exactly who that was.

The man who created the custody documents.

The man who helped build the lie.

Then my security director said:

"Richard..."

"There's one more thing."

"What?"

"He has Maya's original birth records."

My blood froze.

"Why?"

The line went silent.

Then:

May you like

"Because David claims..."

"He is Maya's biological father."
