Chapter 14 - The Echo of a Promise
Back at the private Manhattan hospital room, the harsh autumn sunlight filtered softly through the blinds, casting warm lines across the white floor tiles.
Renata was awake, sitting up slightly against the adjusted mattress. The severe swelling on her face had faded into a pale yellow bruise, and though the metal halo brace still framed her head, the bright, intelligent spark in her hazel eyes had fully returned.
She held a cup of warm water in her hands, carefully sipping through a straw, as I sat beside her peeling another apple.
"Dad," Renata murmured softly, her voice still a little raspy. "The nurses said the court injunctions were all dropped. They said the Cordova family... they're completely gone."
"They won't bother you ever again, Mija," I said gently, handing her a small slice of apple on a napkin. "Neither will anyone else."
She looked at me for a long, searching moment, her eyes studying my face with a depth of maturity that came from surviving the unimaginable. "The key... the vault downtown... and the letter from Mom. You found them, didn't you?"
I paused, setting the pocket knife down on the bedside table. I reached into my breast pocket, touching the folded paper containing Elena’s final words from twenty years ago.
"I found them," I answered honestly. "Your mother didn't die on the highway, Renata. She walked away to keep us safe from the shadows of my past. And when you found those files in the university lab... you walked right into the middle of those same shadows."
Tears welled up in Renata’s eyes, but she didn't cry out. She reached across the gap and placed her hand over mine. "You gave it all up for us, Dad. You became Daniel Salgado so we could live a normal life."

"You weren't a normal life, Renata," I whispered, squeezing her fingers. "You were the best thing that ever happened to me. The only thing that ever mattered."
She smiled, a small, genuine expression that reached her eyes. "Then let's go home. I'm tired of hospitals."
