Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

Margaret dropped her espresso cup. It shattered against the tile, dark coffee staining the imported white marble like blood.
"What did you just say?" Margaret shrieked, standing up so fast her chair screeched backward. "How dare you speak to my son like that! Do you know who we are? We are the Vances!"
Victor offered a tight, humorless smile. "Correction, Mrs. Vance. You were the Vances. As of 6:00 AM this morning, Vance Global Logistics has officially filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation due to insurmountable, unpayable debt defaults."
Brenda wandered down the stairs wrapped in one of Andrew's silk bathrobes, rubbing her eyes sleepily. "Andrew, what's all the screaming about? Who are these creepy men?"
Andrew ignored her, his face turning an ugly shade of purple as he stared at Victor. "That's impossible! We have fifty million in active contracts! We just closed a major deal with the Escalante group last month!"
"You didn't close a deal with the Escalantes, Andrew," a cool, composed voice echoed from the doorway.
The security guards stepped aside, parting like the Red Sea.
Mariana walked into the mansion. She wore a sharp, tailored black trench coat over a pearl-white silk blouse. Her dark hair was pulled back into a flawless ponytail, and though a faint purple shadow still lingered on her cheek where Andrew had struck her, her posture radiated an absolute, terrifying royalty.
Andrew stared at her, his jaw dropping. "M-Mariana? What are you doing back here? Did you call these men? What kind of sick joke is this?"
"It’s not a joke, Andrew," Mariana said softly, walking over to the shattered coffee table where her crystal had been broken the night before. She picked up a loose glass shard, inspecting it before dropping it back down. "It's an eviction."
"Eviction?!" Brenda burst out laughing, though her voice shook nervously. "Are you out of your mind, you ungrateful little beggar? This is a ten-million-dollar estate! Andrew owns this house!"
Mariana turned her slow, piercing gaze onto Brenda. The sheer chill in her eyes made Brenda instantly shrink back against the banister.
"Andrew doesn't own a single brick of this house," Mariana said evenly. "He doesn't own his cars, his watches, his company, or the clothes on his back. Every single asset was purchased using the venture capital fund established by my father—Marcus Escalante."
The room went dead silent.
Margaret’s face lost every drop of color. She grabbed onto the kitchen counter for support, her lips trembling. "Escalante... Marcus Escalante? The shipping tycoon? The international conglomerate founder?"
"The very same," Mariana replied, stepping closer to Andrew, who stood frozen like a statue.
"No..." Andrew whispered, shaking his head in frantic denial. "No! You were just a quiet girl from an ordinary family! I 'rescued' you! You worked as an assistant, you wore cheap clothes—"
"I wore what I wanted to wear, Andrew," Mariana interrupted, her voice dropping an octave into a tone of absolute command. "I wanted to see if you could love someone for who they were, without the shield of my family's name. And you answered that question brilliantly last night."

She reached up, tapping her bruised cheek lightly.
"You wanted to teach me a lesson about control. So I decided to show you who actually held the leash."
