Chapter 9 - The Margaret’s Maneuver

While Andrew spiraled into despair in Queens, Margaret Vance refused to accept defeat sitting down.
For thirty years, Margaret had operated under the delusion that the Vance name carried a hereditary immunity against consequences. If Mariana wouldn't listen to a broken husband, Margaret believed she could weaponize public opinion and societal shame to force the Escalante family back to the negotiating table.
She marched directly into the high-end boutique hotel lobby on Madison Avenue where Mariana’s father, Marcus Escalante, was known to hold weekly private breakfasts with his primary board members.
Margaret wore her oldest, most conservative Chanel tweed suit—her armor of choice when pretending to be the victim of a vulgar society.
As Marcus Escalante stepped out of the private dining room, flanked by two corporate security consultants, Margaret stepped directly into his path, throwing her hands up dramatically.
"Marcus Escalante!" Margaret announced loudly, ensuring every wealthy patron in the lounge turned to look. "I demand a word with you about your daughter's unhinged, predatory behavior!"
Marcus didn't break his stride. He stopped calmly, looking down at Margaret the way a botanist examines an intrusive weed.
"Ah, Mrs. Vance," Marcus said, his voice entirely even, devoid of any anger or surprise. "Or should I simply call you Margaret now that your utility bills are bouncing?"
Margaret’s face flushed a mottled crimson. "Your daughter has stolen my son's life! She trapped him with a fake identity, stripped him of his company, and threw us onto the street like stray dogs! This is extortion! I will go to the press! I will expose the Escalante name for the ruthless monopoly it truly is!"
Marcus smiled, a cold, razor-thin expression that didn't reach his eyes.
"Go ahead, Margaret," Marcus invited smoothly. "Please, call every newspaper in Manhattan. Tell them how your son spent four years living inside an empire built and funded entirely by my daughter while he played billionaire on television. Tell them how he rewarded her loyalty by committing domestic assault in front of his mistress."
The surrounding patrons began murmuring, turning their heads away in disgust as they recognized Margaret from the leaked tabloid reports flooding social media that morning.
"The press would love nothing more than a deep dive into the Vance family tax filings over the last decade," Marcus continued, stepping closer and lowering his voice to a dangerous whisper. "Every shell corporation, every inflated invoice, every bribe your late husband paid to cover up your son's corporate failures—it’s all sitting in my legal team’s discovery box, ready to be handed to the District Attorney."

Margaret opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. The absolute terror gripped her throat.
"Now," Marcus concluded, straightening his cuffs, "turn around, walk out these doors, and never speak my daughter's name again. Because the next time you cross our path, Margaret, there won't be a restraining order waiting for you. There will only be handcuffs."
