Chapter 10 - What Victor Called Loyalty

I had spent two years blaming rain.

Then grief.

Then myself.

Now a wounded investigator was telling me someone had tampered with Evelyn's brakes.

The crash report had mentioned brake failure as a possible consequence of impact, not a cause. I called the retired mechanic who examined the car.

He remembered something.

"The rear brake line had a clean puncture," he said. "Insurance told us it happened during recovery. I disagreed."

"Who from insurance?"

He found the old email.

Stephen Cross.

By morning, I convened an emergency board meeting.

Victor arrived smiling.

Stephen looked annoyed.

Neither knew federal investigators were already reviewing copies of our payroll records.

I placed June's pay statements on the table.

"Explain these."

Victor glanced once. "Administrative contractor discrepancy. We'll correct it."

I added 142 more files.

His smile thinned.

"Explain those."

Stephen leaned back. "Marcus, don't turn an HR issue into theater."

I placed Caleb's complaint beside them.

Victor's face went still.

Then Evelyn's letter.

That broke the room.

"Where did you get that?" Victor asked.

"Does it matter?"

"Yes."

For the first time in twenty years, he sounded afraid.

I told the board about Northline, Lake Crown, the hidden foundation account, the falsified complaints, and the forged payroll resolutions.

Stephen called it speculation.

Then Rachel entered with two investigators and a court preservation order covering company servers.

Victor stared at me.

"You brought outsiders into Blackwell business?"

"You stole from Blackwell workers."

"I protected this company."

"By starving housekeepers?"

His face hardened.

"You have no idea what it cost to keep your empire clean enough for you to sleep at night."

I stood.

"My employees couldn't afford dinner while you bought your daughter a future. Don't talk to me about cost."

Victor leaned close enough that only I could hear.

"Evelyn understood eventually."

My body went cold.

"What did you say?"

He smiled without warmth.

"Ask yourself why she never gave you those papers."

Security moved toward him.

Before they reached the door, every screen in the boardroom went black.

Then an emergency alert appeared.

UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS - FAMILY RESIDENCE SECURITY SYSTEM.

I called the mansion.

No answer.

June called the guesthouse where her children were staying under guard.

No answer there either.

Then her phone received a photograph.

Lila and Micah were sitting on the floor of my wine cellar.

Behind them stood Stephen Cross.
