Chapter 3 - The Price of Silence

June went completely still.

"What did you say?"

Brent looked at me instead of her. "I need protection."

"You need to start talking."

"Victor doesn't steal a little money," he said. "He owns people. Debts, secrets, mistakes. He finds the weak spot and keeps pressing until you do what he wants."

June stepped forward. "How does he know about my kids?"

Brent swallowed. "Employee intake files. Emergency contacts. School addresses. Medical forms. Everything goes through Domestic Services."

I felt sick.

I had built systems to make my companies efficient. Victor had turned those systems into weapons.

"How long has this been happening?" I asked.

"Years."

"How many employees?"

"I don't know. Dozens. Maybe more."

He said Victor used a staffing company called Northline Resource Group. Blackwell Domestic Services paid full salaries to Northline. Northline paid workers reduced wages and labeled the difference as placement fees, insurance, transport, housing support, or payroll corrections.

"Who owns Northline?" I asked.

Brent looked at the floor.

"On paper? A woman named Celia Marsh."

I knew that name.

Victor's sister-in-law.

June let out a broken laugh. "So every week I skipped meals, someone in your company called it a fee?"

I had no answer that could make that sentence less disgusting.

Brent pointed to the USB. "That has the files Victor wanted erased. Names, adjustments, complaints."

"Why help him?"

His eyes hardened with shame. "My brother owes money. Victor bought the debt."

I called my attorney, Rachel Dunn, and told her to come to the house immediately. Then I called a private forensic accountant named Nolan Pierce and gave him one instruction: mirror every payroll server before anyone touched another file.

June stared at me. "You're going after him?"

"I'm finding out what he did."

"That's not the same thing."

She was right.

I looked at the plate of cold food she still held.

"No," I said. "It isn't."

By dawn, Rachel arrived with two investigators. Brent agreed to give a statement in exchange for legal counsel and protection.

Nolan called at 5:17 a.m.

"Marcus, we cloned the payroll database."

"What did you find?"

A pause.

"June's wages aren't the biggest problem."

"What is?"

"There are 143 current and former employees with the same pattern."

I closed my eyes.

Then Nolan added, "And someone has been sending the stolen difference into a holding account under your late wife's name."
