The water hit Julian Cross before the room understood what Serena Vale had done.

Serena set the empty crystal glass down with a sharp little click.

“You brought me to the most expensive restaurant in Chicago,” she said, loud enough for every nearby table to hear, “and now you’re telling me your card won’t cover dinner?”

Julian wiped his face with his napkin.

He did not raise his voice.

He did not look at the people turning in their chairs.

He only looked at the leather folder beside Serena’s hand.

Serena had ordered a private tasting menu, two bottles of rare wine, imported caviar, and champagne for six strangers she had invited over from the bar.
