Chapter 13 - THE FINAL LEVER
Julian drove to the hospital with Ortiz.
Rachel’s bed was empty.
On the pillow lay a single green envelope.
Inside was a note in Rachel’s handwriting.
JULIAN, DON’T FOLLOW. SHE HAS DAD’S ORIGINAL LEDGER.
Evelyn had planned a second escape before entering the estate.
The woman arrested at the fire was not the end of her plan.
From the police interview room, Evelyn refused to speak.
Then Julian placed the green note on the table.
“Where is Rachel?”
Evelyn smiled.
“She was always more useful than you.”
Ortiz leaned forward.
“You are already facing conspiracy, kidnapping, attempted murder, fraud, and weapons charges.”
“Then another accusation changes nothing.”
Julian studied his mother.
“You don’t have Rachel.”
Her smile tightened.
“You had someone take her, but you don’t know where they went.”
Evelyn said nothing.
Julian continued.
“Graham changed the plan. He wants the ledger too.”
For the first time, fear entered her eyes.
Ortiz checked Graham’s seized phone.
A deleted map pin led to a storage facility near the river.
They found Rachel locked inside an office, weak but alive.
Beside her sat a gray-haired attorney named Samuel Wren, Evelyn’s trustee for twenty years.
He held a cardboard ledger box and a gasoline can.
“Back away,” he warned.
Rachel looked at Julian.
“The ledger proves Mom and Vale Capital stole from Dad before his death.”
Wren raised a lighter.
“One spark and every original is gone.”
Serena stepped around Ortiz.
“My brother already copied it.”
Wren looked at her.
“He didn’t.”
“Yes, he did. That’s what was on the memory card.”
The lie made him hesitate.
Rachel kicked the gasoline can.
Ortiz rushed Wren and knocked the lighter away.
Julian pulled his sister to safety.
Inside the ledger box were handwritten records linking Evelyn, Graham, Adrian, Pike, and three board members to years of fraud.
The investigation was finally complete.
Or so Julian thought.
Then Rachel opened the last envelope.

The name printed on the signature line was Serena Vale.
