Chapter 15 - THE TABLE BY THE WINDOW

Six months later, Ember House looked almost the same.

The chandeliers glowed.

The glasses shone.

The tables remained difficult to reserve.

But the people inside had changed.

Mr. Pike’s office had become an employee legal-aid room.

Noah was training as an assistant manager on a full scholarship funded by the company.

Rachel had returned as chief financial officer after every charge against her was dismissed.

Evelyn Cross, Graham Vale, and Samuel Wren were awaiting trial on federal conspiracy and fraud charges.

Adrian and Pike had accepted plea agreements in exchange for testimony.

Julian kept Serena’s shares in an independent employee trust.

He did not use them to increase his own control.

One rainy evening, Serena entered the restaurant alone.

She wore no designer labels anyone could recognize.

She waited near the host stand until Noah approached.

“I don’t have a reservation,” she said.

Noah studied her.

“There’s a table by the kitchen.”

“That’s fine.”

Julian watched from across the room.

Serena ordered soup and sparkling water.

When the check came, she paid it quietly and left a generous tip.

Then she walked to Julian’s table.

“I’m working with a financial-abuse nonprofit,” she said. “Mostly intake calls. Nobody there cares who my family is.”

“That sounds useful.”

“It is.”

She looked toward table nine.

“I used to replay that night and think the worst moment was learning you owned the restaurant.”

Julian waited.

“It wasn’t. The worst moment was realizing I would have felt no shame if you hadn’t.”

“That’s the truth you needed.”

She nodded.

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

She did not ask for another chance.

He did not offer one.

Some endings are not reunions.

Some are the moment two people finally stop lying about who they were.

After Serena left, Noah brought Julian a glass of water.

“On the house,” he said.

Julian smiled.

“Careful. I hear the owner is strict.”

Noah glanced around the dining room.

“The owner should be.”

Julian raised the glass.

At table nine, a young couple split a modest dinner and laughed without checking who was watching.

Nobody humiliated anyone.

May you like

Nobody performed for a camera.

And for the first time in a long time, Ember House felt rich for reasons that had nothing to do with money.
