Chapter 12 - Grant Breaks

Grant Bell lasted eleven minutes.

Detective Castillo put him in an interview room, placed Rosa's recording on the table, added the payment ledger, then showed him a still image from the estate camera: Grant entering through the service door the night the nursery was searched.

Jason watched through the one-way glass.

Rachel sat beside him.

Grant rubbed both hands over his face.

"I never agreed to hurt Rachel."

Castillo's voice stayed calm. "But you agreed to forge a mental-health record."

"I drafted language. Gwen put it in the system."

Rachel whispered, "There."

Jason's jaw flexed.

Castillo leaned forward. "Why?"

Grant looked toward the mirror, almost as if he could see Jason behind it.

"Vanessa believed Rachel would use the child's trust vote to remove her from the company."

"And would she?"

"I don't know."

"What was Plan A?"

Grant swallowed.

"Build a record. Make Rachel look unstable. Create incidents. Missed appointments. Angry messages. Confusion. Then file before the baby was born."

Rachel's eyes burned.

"Create incidents?"

Grant continued. "Vanessa wanted Jason frightened enough to support temporary guardianship. Once the documents were signed, the trust proxy could be controlled through him."

Castillo asked, "And the pool?"

"I told her no."

"That's not what the recording sounds like."

Grant hit the table with his palm. "I told her no after that!"

The room went quiet.

Castillo waited.

Grant's shoulders fell.

"She said Plan A was failing. Rachel was fighting back. She said she needed an accident people could witness. Something that made Rachel look careless."

Jason cursed under his breath.

Castillo slid David's ledger copy forward.

"Tell me about David."

Grant went pale.

"No."

"You just admitted conspiracy to falsify medical records. This is the moment to stop protecting her."

Grant stared at the page.

"David found the foundation accounts."

"Then what?"

"He moved the original records."

"Where?"

Grant looked at the mirror again.

"A private vault at the lake house."

Jason stood.

Grant suddenly leaned toward Castillo.

"If you're going there, don't call anyone from the Hawthorne office. Vanessa monitors the security company."

May you like

"Why?"

Grant whispered, "Because David wasn't alone when he died."
