Chapter 19 - The Final Vote

Rachel's daughter was born at 2:14 a.m.
Seven pounds of furious lungs and dark hair.
Jason cried before she did.
"She's perfect," he whispered.
Rachel held the baby against her chest and felt the world narrow to warmth, breath, and one tiny hand curled beneath her chin.
For six hours, nothing else mattered.
Then Jason's phone began ringing.
The board had called an emergency session.
One director, Thomas Vale, had been using Hawthorne office systems to help Vanessa after her arrest. Investigators linked him to the fake hospital transfer call and to attempts to delete foundation records.
"Don't go," Rachel said.
Jason looked at her. "I can vote remotely."
"I don't mean the meeting. I mean don't go back to being afraid of that company."
He sat beside her bed.
"I'm not."
At noon, the board appeared on a secure screen.
Vanessa's chair at the head of the table was empty.
Thomas Vale's chair was empty too.
Jason held his daughter while Rachel sat beside him.
The corporate secretary cleared her throat.
"Under the Hawthorne trust, the birth of Jason Hawthorne's first daughter activates the protected voting block. Pending final registration, the child's guardians hold the proxy jointly."
Rachel looked at Jason.
He smiled.
The secretary continued. "A motion has been introduced to remove Vanessa Hawthorne from all executive authority and appoint an independent forensic review of the foundation accounts."
One by one, directors voted.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
The final count was not close.
Mia, watching from the doorway, started to cry.
Rachel exhaled.
Jason kissed the baby's forehead.
"Your grandmother spent months trying to control your first vote," he whispered. "You slept through it."
Rachel laughed.
Then Detective Castillo called.
Her voice was serious.
"We found the last missing file from David's vault."
Jason's smile disappeared.
"What was in it?"
"A list of everyone who helped Vanessa move money. Grant. Gwen. Thomas. Two former executives."
"Anyone else?"
Castillo paused.
"One name was handwritten at the bottom."
Jason looked at Rachel.
"Whose?"
May you like
Castillo answered.
"Mia Hawthorne."
